Garden Room Extension, East Devon

New Space Architecture

Our clients wanted a complete contrast to their existing brick bungalow. Gary and Caron were clear from the start; they wanted an extension that was beautiful, elegant and modern - a complete contrast from their existing brick bungalow. With some major internal alterations too, this project was brilliant to work on from start to finish. The use of a mono pitched roof, burnt timber cladding (done by the clients themselves), beautiful louvred shading and large areas of glazing all came together to create this striking extension to the home. The new rear living room provides a tranquil space, filled with light and with a seamless connection to the garden. Internally the new bedroom arrangement and master suite now allow the previously dark entrance hall to be flooded with light from front to back, cleverly dividing the internal space between bedrooms and daytime rooms. We are absolutely delighted with the end result and more importantly, so are the clients!

Completed in 2015, this project incorporates a Scandinavian vibe to enhance the modern architecture and farmhouse details. The vision was to create a balanced and consistent design to reflect clean lines and subtle rustic details, which creates a calm sanctuary. The whole home is not based on a design aesthetic, but rather how someone wants to feel in a space, specifically the feeling of being cozy, calm, and clean. This home is an interpretation of modern design without focusing on one specific genre; it boasts a midcentury master bedroom, stark and minimal bathrooms, an office that doubles as a music den, and modern open concept on the first floor. A residence designed for informal gathering and relaxation on a quiet cove near Acadia National Park. Conceived of as a compound of connected gathering spaces with adjacent private retreat spaces. The "village" of structures is designed to open and close seasonally with large sliding barn doors. These also modulate light, air and views into and out of the cottages. Carefully positioned to take advantage of the rich variety of views and sloping topography, the cottages have integral terraces and retaining walls to negotiate the undulating land-form. One arrives at the high point of the site and the long barn axis and navigates between the cottages to the main entrance. Once inside, the home deliberately reveals unique views to the ocean, mountains and surrounding spruce forest.

Ausgangssituation Ein auf dem Grundstück bestehender Ferienbungalow aus den 1950er Jahren musste dem Neubau eines Einfamilienhauses für eine junge vierköpfige Familie weichen. Der Einsatz von natürlichen Materialien, wie Holz, Naturstein, Dämmstoffen aus Holzwolle, etc. war den Bauherren sehr wichtig. Dieser Umstand und die landwirtschaftlich geprägte Umgebung gaben dem Gebäude seine Form und sein Erscheinungsbild. Konstruktion, energetisches und ökologisches Konzept Das voll unterkellerte Gebäude steht auf einem schmalen, langgestreckten Grundstück und öffnet sich nach Südwesten, über eine beheizbare Pfosten- Riegel- Fassade mit Dreifachverglasung. Alle statischen Konstruktionselemente, wie Wände, Decken und das Dach, bestehen aus Dickholzplatten. Lediglich die tragenden Innenwände im Erdgeschoss wurden aus Kalksandstein errichtet. Die so generierte „Speichermasse“, eine kontrollierte Be- und Entlüftung mit Wärmerückgewinnung, sowie auf den Innenwänden angebrachte Wandheizmodule tragen zu einem behaglichen Wohnklima bei. Für das Gebäude wurde überwiegend heimisches Holz aus der Produktion eines nahe gelegenen Holzverarbeitungsbetriebes verwendet. Alle Konstruktions- und Verkleidungshölzer wurden unbehandelt eingebaut. Die Wärmeversorgung erfolgt über eine zentrale Pelletheizung. Die auf dem Dach angeordneten Sonnenkollektoren dienen sowohl der Warmwasserbereitung als auch der Heizungsunterstützung. Über eine Regenwasserzisterne werden die Spülkästen der Toiletten und die Waschmaschine mit gesammeltem Niederschlagswasser versorgt. Das Gertenwasser wird ebenso über die Zisterne bereitgestellt.
