Ultramodern German Kitchen in Findon Valley, West Sussex Our contracts team make the most of a wonderful open plan space with an ultramodern kitchen design & theme. The Brief For this kitchen project in Findon Valley a truly unique design was required. With this property recently extensively renovated, a vast ground floor space required a minimalist kitchen theme to suit the style of this client. A key desirable was a link between the outdoors and the kitchen space, completely level flooring in this room meant that when bi-fold doors were peeled back the kitchen could function as an extension of this sunny garden. Throughout, personal inclusions and elements have been incorporated to suit this client. Design Elements To achieve the brief of this project designer Sarah from our contracts team conjured a design that utilised a huge bank of units across the back wall of this space. This provided the client with vast storage and also meant no wall units had to be used at the client’s request. Further storage, seating and space for appliances is provided across a huge 4.6-meter island. To suit the open plan style of this project, contemporary German furniture has been used from premium supplier Nobilia. The chosen finish of Slate Grey compliments modern accents used elsewhere in the property, with a dark handleless rail also contributing to the theme. Special Inclusions An important element was a minimalist and uncluttered feel throughout. To achieve this plentiful storage and custom pull-out platforms for small appliances have been utilised to minimise worktop clutter. A key part of this design was also the high-performance appliances specified. Within furniture a Neff combination microwave, Neff compact steam oven and two Neff Slide & Hide ovens feature, in addition to two warming drawers beneath ovens. Across the island space, a Bora Pure venting hob is used to remove the need for an overhead extractor – with a Quooker boiling tap also fitted. Project Highlight The undoubtable highlight of this project is the 4.6 metre island – fabricated with seamless Corian work surfaces in an Arrow Root finish. On each end of the island a waterfall edge has been included, with seating and ambient lighting nice additions to this space. The End Result The result of this project is a wonderful open plan kitchen design that incorporates several great features that have been personalised to suit this client’s brief. This project was undertaken by our contract kitchen team. Devereux Beach House Our client presented Flavin Architects with a unique challenge. On a site that previously hosted two houses, our client asked us to design a modestly sized house and separate art studio. Both structures reduce the height and bulk of the original buildings. The modern concrete house we designed is situated on the brow of a steep cliff overlooking Marblehead harbor. The concrete visually anchors the house to stone outcroppings on the property, and the low profile ensures the structure doesn’t conflict with the surround of traditional, gabled homes. Three primary concrete walls run north to south in parallel, forming the structural walls of the home. The entry sequence is carefully considered. The front door is hidden from view from the street. An entry path leads to an intimate courtyard, from which the front door is first visible. Upon entering, the visitor gets the first glimpse of the sea, framed by a portal of cast-in-place concrete. The kitchen, living, and dining space have a soaring 10-foot ceiling creating an especially spacious sense of interiority. A cantilevered deck runs the length of the living room, with a solid railing providing privacy from beach below. Where the house grows from a single to a two-story structure, the concrete walls rise magisterially to the full height of the building. The exterior concrete walls are accented with zinc gutters and downspouts, and wooden Ipe slats which softly filter light through the windows.

A dynamic marble back splash behind the gas range is a compelling focal point. A flat, easy-to-clean, custom, stainless-steel plate frames the exhaust fan in the bridge above the range. Two islands & ceiling-high cabinetry quadruple the previous counter & storage space. The seven foot prep island services the 48” paneled refrigerator & 48” gas range & includes 2nd sink, 2nd dishwasher & 2nd trash/recycling station, while the nine foot multipurpose island with seating services three work stations with multiple storage options for each workstation. Both sink spigots are touch-less & are fed by whole-house water filtration system.

Masterclass Shelford inkwell and light grey Tuscany white worktop Neff appliances Blanco sink and tap Our client wanted to create a social, open plan space where the family could come together to eat, talk and cook with each other on a regular basis. We use the Shelford to create this classic shaker kitchen with contemporary touch in two colours – inkwell and light grey. The quartz worktop in Tuscany white really brought the island and the wall units together as one space. The kitchen was completed with appliances from our Neff range along with a Blanco sink & tap.

Framework House
Framework House
Amos Goldreich ArchitectureAmos Goldreich Architecture
Amos Goldreich Architecture has completed an asymmetric brick extension that celebrates light and modern life for a young family in North London. The new layout gives the family distinct kitchen, dining and relaxation zones, and views to the large rear garden from numerous angles within the home. The owners wanted to update the property in a way that would maximise the available space and reconnect different areas while leaving them clearly defined. Rather than building the common, open box extension, Amos Goldreich Architecture created distinctly separate yet connected spaces both externally and internally using an asymmetric form united by pale white bricks. Previously the rear plan of the house was divided into a kitchen, dining room and conservatory. The kitchen and dining room were very dark; the kitchen was incredibly narrow and the late 90’s UPVC conservatory was thermally inefficient. Bringing in natural light and creating views into the garden where the clients’ children often spend time playing were both important elements of the brief. Amos Goldreich Architecture designed a large X by X metre box window in the centre of the sitting room that offers views from both the sitting area and dining table, meaning the clients can keep an eye on the children while working or relaxing. Amos Goldreich Architecture enlivened and lightened the home by working with materials that encourage the diffusion of light throughout the spaces. Exposed timber rafters create a clever shelving screen, functioning both as open storage and a permeable room divider to maintain the connection between the sitting area and kitchen. A deep blue kitchen with plywood handle detailing creates balance and contrast against the light tones of the pale timber and white walls. The new extension is clad in white bricks which help to bounce light around the new interiors, emphasise the freshness and newness, and create a clear, distinct separation from the existing part of the late Victorian semi-detached London home. Brick continues to make an impact in the patio area where Amos Goldreich Architecture chose to use Stone Grey brick pavers for their muted tones and durability. A sedum roof spans the entire extension giving a beautiful view from the first floor bedrooms. The sedum roof also acts to encourage biodiversity and collect rainwater. Continues Amos Goldreich, Director of Amos Goldreich Architecture says: “The Framework House was a fantastic project to work on with our clients. We thought carefully about the space planning to ensure we met the brief for distinct zones, while also keeping a connection to the outdoors and others in the space. “The materials of the project also had to marry with the new plan. We chose to keep the interiors fresh, calm, and clean so our clients could adapt their future interior design choices easily without the need to renovate the space again.” Clients, Tom and Jennifer Allen say: “I couldn’t have envisioned having a space like this. It has completely changed the way we live as a family for the better. We are more connected, yet also have our own spaces to work, eat, play, learn and relax.” “The extension has had an impact on the entire house. When our son looks out of his window on the first floor, he sees a beautiful planted roof that merges with the garden.”

Pictured here is a closeup of the microwave and island storage which includes 4 pantry drawers, under cabinet microwave, drawers for pots and pans easily located near the cooktop and drawers for kitchen supplies, napkins, and other items. The kitchen was originally planned to mimic the location of appliances in her current kitchen to minimize re-learning of appliance locations. The only change was adding a trash cabinet between the fridge and the sink. A french door fridge allows someone in a wheelchair to easily access frozen and cold foods, while the water and ice dispenser on the outside of the door make it easy to stay hydrated rather than using the sink each time. She can roll up to the kitchen sink due to the recessed cabinetry under the sink or stand at counter height to put away dishes from the dishwasher. The dishwasher is ADA and very simple to use , and is raised off the floor so whether she is sitting or standing it's easier to reach. The gas cooktop has controls at the front making it easy to reach from the wheelchair and the exhaust fan above also has a control at the front. All cabinet door handles are D-shape, which makes them easy to grasp and there is plenty of electric outlets for charging phones, computers and small appliances. The kitchen island is table height at 30" so meal prep can be easily done in a wheelchair while guests and can be seated in a chair or wheelchair around the island. The dining chairs can also be turned around to add extra seating in the living room area. Pendant lights above the kitchen island light up the space, while recessed lighting in the kitchen and living room provide overall room lighting. There is also under cabinet lighting which makes the room glow at night! Wainscoting made of commercial grade material is strategically placed on sharp corners and exposed walls to reduce and minimize damage from the wheel chair, while creating a finished and complete look! We selected a free standing microwave to sit below the island, which is easy to use and is the same style as in her previous apartment. The island is 48" from the appliance wall, leaving ample space to open doors and maneuver around in the wheelchair and has easy access to the laundry area as well. We eliminated the pocket doors that had been in front of the laundry area for easy access, and since it was exposed, dressed it up with coordinating tile to the kitchen with additional cabinets above. There is a coordinating quartz counter on top of the washer and dryer for folding laundry or storing additional supplies.
