“Searl Lamaster Howe is a firm that genuinely listens to the client. The project was a true collaboration, and the results astonishing. The architects are responsive, responsible and super-creative. They took a rundown country house and, essentially maintaining the footprint of the original home, turned it into something splendid at reasonable cost. SLH's attention to detail (e.g. custom cabinetry), use of ecologically sensitive materials, and thoughtful consideration of ongoing operating costs (e.g. geothermal heat and A/C) have contributed to a resounding success. The client is ecstatic, and the project has been recognized by numerous awards from the American Institute of Architects and others, as well as publicity in national newspapers and journals. “We have a small house in Riverside. It is about 1,000 sf. It is a split level modern house built in the 1950's. We wanted an open plan concept with a cathedral ceiling. We removed wall to new ceiling, creating an upstairs loft. The project was completed in 2001.We have lived in it for 11 years! We love the plan and the cathedral ceiling 16' high. Our room is now open 20'x24', with new skylights above the living room. Arlene was a terrific help. We got our plans on time during the design phase, and got our permits without any new work or any changes to our design. We have enjoyed our redesigned home for the past 11 years and would definitely recommend Arlene to our friends! ”

“I hired Allen Villanueva to help me convert my 2 flat into a Single Family Home. He did all of the architecture plans, worked closely with my general contractor, as well as helped me select all of the materials (tile, marble, appliances, fixtures). He works very collaboratively with his clients, allowing their style to come through. I love my house.”

“Greg was the architect on the gut rehab of our 100+ year-old home. Greg did a excellent job of modernizing the interior layout (opening-up the space and improving the flow) while staying true the "old house spirit" of the place. He designed some very nice interior touches that always draw complements from guests (I always get a kick out of it when people praise the "custom molding" in our family room, which Greg had to improvise to conceal plumbing from the bathroom we added upstairs). We were very pleased with the results and would hire Greg again”

“We engaged Laura to help us figure out how to maximize the living space on the second floor of a 100-year old frame house. We wanted to rearrange the space to add a third bedroom and two bathrooms (the second floor did not have a bathroom) while maintaining the character of the building. We found her professional, pleasant and easy to work with. Her price was fair, and I was especially impressed with Laura's creativity in coming up with a design that worked for us in spite of challenging space limitations and code requirements. We are very pleased with the result, which exceeded our expectations, and would highly recommend her.”

“I asked Palmyra's help with the design of my new kitchen, as well as the 2 full/1 half bathrooms of my new house. With regards to the kitchen, the assigned architect had already made an initial design, but I was very unhappy with it (but had to just let it slide since the bureaucracy in Greece is extremely time consuming). I was also building the house with 1 more person so I couldn't fully make my own decisions early on. Not only Palmyra made me love the new kitchen that she designed, the assigned architect also admitted it was a much better design! Spacious, open, but very, very functional with lots of storage space. Looks awesome too, everyone entering the house comments on the kitchen. As for the bathrooms, Palmyra encouraged me to be creative, and she would never "instruct" me, even though many times I asked her to just tell me what to do! She always mentioned that the house should have something from me as well, and I should be the one making the final calls. She would of course steer me out of potential issues with my decisions, but the end result is that I truly love the bathrooms, especially the purple guest bathroom! I super strongly recommend Palmyra. Besides her knowledge and professionalism, she actually taught me a lot about the process of remodeling, and I truly feel that the house has "something of me" embedded in it!”
