The "blue hour" is that magical time of day when sunlight scatters and the sky becomes a deep shade of blue. For this Mediterranean-style Sea Cliff home from the 1920s, we took our design inspiration from the twilight period that inspired artists and photographers. The living room features moody blues and neutral shades on the main floor. We selected contemporary furnishings and modern art for this active family of five. Upstairs are the bedrooms and a home office, while downstairs, a media room, and wine cellar provide a place for adults and young children to relax and play.

Wine Cellars come in many forms and styles. Our client’s had studied different styles of designs for many years as well as collecting over 1200 bottles of wine in all shapes and sizes. Under the stairs closet? Boring. Now how about an under the stairs wine cellar ? Unassuming can be gold, and that is exactly what this custom wine cellar is. Designing, Building, and Installing an under the stairs wine cellar is a fantastic way to utilize an otherwise uninteresting location in your home. Here in Newport Beach, Orange County, California, this homeowner did just that. Even though small, this glass door / glass front wine cellar / glass wine room / glass wine vault holds upwards of 480 bottles with ease. The design build team at Vintage Cellars worked closely with this client to create a hybrid style wine cellar design in metal, wood, and glass. Contemporary and modern flair accent this traditional design. Triple deep metal wine racks line the top of this wine room, circling the walls with their ability to display wines horizontally and label forward. At waist height, a thin marble countertop sits above a completely custom, three tiered system of metal and wood storage for original wooden cases by Noe Design Co. Everything is on full display here. Behind the wine racking / wine rack / wine racks, the wall is adorned with white subway tile which makes the modern black wine racks really pop and appeal to the eye. The pegs hold each wine bottle horizontally so that bottles and their labels are on full display. Through the middle of the cellar, three stone platforms hold oversized bottles upright, though this is truly only a display feature. Serious wine connoisseurs always store their most prized wines horizontally, ensuring that corks remain wet and the bottles are able to be aged gracefully. The Design Build team at Vintage Cellars decided that the best utilization of the space for cooling would be to recess the cooling unit directly into the ceiling. With a vision for both intimate and large gatherings and minimal maintenance, we developed simple architectural details that organize the primary living spaces and integrate mechanical, lighting and structural elements. Their growing art collection is set against classic oak paneling, travertine and oak flooring and white lacquer finishes. Seeded glass and metal doors filter natural light into the center of the apartment and reflect city and lake views. The result is an understated yet inviting home.
