A.Kist A 750 square foot top floor apartment is transformed from a cramped and musty two bedroom into a sun-drenched aerie with a second floor home office recaptured from an old storage loft. Multiple skylights and a large picture window allow light to fill the space altering the feeling throughout the days and seasons. Views of New York Harbor, previously ignored, are now a daily event. Flavin Architects collaborated with Ben Wood Studio Shanghai on the design of this modern house overlooking a blueberry farm. A contemporary design that looks at home in a traditional New England landscape, this house features many environmentally sustainable features including passive solar heat and native landscaping. The David Hockney 1978 art piece Swimming Pool with Reflection inspired this California-cool bathroom. Watery-blue glass mosaic tile spills down the shower wall and out onto the concrete-gray tile floor in puddles. The custom back-painted glass vanity floats on the blue walls and is anchored by a chrome Kohler faucet, adding a modern sophistication to this fun space perfect for a young boy. Dans cet appartement sous les toits de Paris abandonné depuis les années 1900, la transformation est totale. Une page blanche pour écrire une histoire contemporaine pleine de charme. En premier lieu, le volume de l’appartement et des combles ont été réunis en supprimant le plancher. Un parquet en point de Hongrie redonne noblesse et chaleur au lieu. Une cuisine, un dressing, une bibliothèque aux façades épurées épousant la forme du toit offrent de grands rangements. Du mobilier chinés et une décoration colorés sublime l'ensemble. Le cocon d’une parisienne est né.

We completed a luxury apartment in Primrose Hill. This is the second apartment within the same building to be designed by the practice, commissioned by a new client who viewed the initial scheme and immediately briefed the practice to conduct a similar high-end refurbishment. The brief was to fully maximise the potential of the 60-square metre, two-bedroom flat, improving usable space, and optimising natural light. 

We significantly reconfigured the apartment’s spatial lay-out – the relocated kitchen, now open-plan, is seamlessly integrated within the living area, while a window between the kitchen and the entrance hallway creates new visual connections and a more coherent sense of progression from one space to the next. The previously rather constrained single bedroom has been enlarged, with additional windows introducing much needed natural light. The reconfigured space also includes a new bathroom.

The apartment is finely detailed, with bespoke joinery and ingenious storage solutions such as a walk-in wardrobe in the master bedroom and a floating sideboard in the living room. Elsewhere, potential space has been imaginatively deployed – a former wall cabinet now accommodates the guest WC.

The choice of colour palette and materials is deliberately light in tone, further enhancing the apartment’s spatial volumes, while colourful furniture and accessories provide focus and variation. Photographer: Rory Gardiner

The client for this bath requested that Perianth create a sleek and chic hotel feel for his Upper West Side condo. The concept for the bath as a whole was to create an escape; the concept for the shower itself was to create an enveloping mood that surrounded you from floor to ceiling. By bringing the lighter tiles into the corners, the black tiles in the shower were defined. Whimsical and reasonably priced artwork helps to make it light, fun and still sophisticated.
