We chose Johnston Design Group as our architects because of recommendations, reputation and their knowledge of renewable energy matters. Their fee structure was both modular and reasonable. We had a home built elsewhere for us before, quite a while ago, but the experience was very different this time around. We were much more involved in the decision making at all stages. We were a bit apprehensive about being so far away, but GoToMeeting software took care of that. Together we forged our floor plan remotely, and it really works for us. JDG had lots of ideas along the way that contributed to its being the best house that we have ever occupied. It’s expensive to build a house, but today’s new home has solar tubes, heated floors, better insulation, circulating hot water, spacious closets and other conveniences that you just don’t find in older homes. JDG was wonderful to work with and I consider them our friends today. We really had fun with the whole process and I for one, would do it all again. Our home is beautiful, energy efficient and functional. Not to mention, we’ve enjoyed my first ever $4.38 electric bill!

I commend our architects from Johnston Design Group for interpreting our family’s somewhat inarticulate ideas about what we wanted in a home and translating them into a completely accurate physical statement of who we are and how we want to live. From our perspective, the house is stunningly beautiful, yet feels intimately familiar and comfortable to us and our guests. The finished house exceeded our expectations of what we could create as our vacation home. JDG embraced our concept of creating an “inside-outside house” to celebrate the beauty of our setting by incorporating natural materials to transition between the exterior and interior spaces. The result is a cohesive, consistent design and feel. The team supported our interest in constructing a LEED-certified eco-friendly home and provided the road map to accomplish that objective. The process of moving from a vacant piece of land to a completed home was remarkably efficient and stress-free, especially considering that we managed the project remotely. Our architects were always available to talk with us and made many site visits on our behalf. I especially valued JDG’s expertise once we began construction, as their construction administration role allowed them to monitor the project closely to make sure that construction adhered to design, resolve constructability questions, and serve as a sounding board for us during the construction process. JDG worked seamlessly with our interior design firm (Postcard from Paris) and builder (The Berry Group) from the beginning until the end of the project to create a very successful team.

The Johnston Design Group (JDG) has done an incredible job in designing and managing the construction of my mountain home in Cashiers, NC. I selected JDG because of their impressive list of credentials, their focus and interest in the environment, LEEDS certification, technology and the wonderful team of people led by Scot Johnston that oversaw my project. The technical and professional skills brought to bear on my project was impressive. Johnston Design Group designed our permanent lake home in Upstate SC. We were looking for a firm that could provide a contemporary design that was LEED certified. Based on references and other projects by the Firm, we believed they had such capabilities. We were very pleased with the innovative ideas Scott Johnston and his fellow architects brought to us including incorporating the openness we were looking for in our home. Because we were living overseas during much of the design process, the Firm used Go To Meeting software to allow us to review design progress with them online. This approach significantly enhanced our understanding of the design and allowed us to provide timely feedback. As a result the design process was completed very timely given our location. Overall we were very pleased with the work of Johnston Design Group and would recommend them highly.
