This classic San Francisco backyard was transformed into an inviting and usable outdoor living space. A few steps down lead to a lounging area, featuring drought-friendly and maintenance-free artificial grass as well as a cozy, custom-built natural gas fire pit surrounded by a Redwood bench. Redwood fencing, low-voltage LED landscape lighting, drip irrigation, planting and a water feature completed the space.

We designed and installed this dramatic living wall / vertical garden to add a welcoming focal point, and a great way to add living beauty to the large front house wall. The wall includes a variety of succulents, grass-like and cascading plants some with flowers, (some with flowers, Oxalis and Lamium) designed to provide long cascading "waves" with appealing textures and colors. The dated walkway was updated with large geometric concrete pavers with polished black pebbles in between, and a new concrete driveway. Water-wise grasses flowering plants and succulents replace the lawn. This updated modern renovation for this mid-century modern home includes a new garage and front entrance door and modern garden light fixtures. Featuring a curved merbau timber bench seat, it floats effortlessly within the outdoor entertaining space. Cypress upright posts create a circular nest to support the landscaped area. This picture is another example of Xeriscape landscaping and gardening. This photo shows how we used two different types of river rock to add interest and contrast. Curving designs are always a good choice in landscaping. They mimic nature and gently lead the eye along the entire landscape. The brick edging we installed also helps with this visual aspect. The large rocks serve two purposes. Firstly, they create a dramatic impact. Secondly, they give the landscape a three-dimensional quality. This helps to prevent the landscape from appearing ‘flat.’ The plants of varying heights and widths also help to achieve this.

Boulder County, Colorado is home to over 100,000 acres of open space. These lands help to conserve the natural, cultural, and agricultural resources that would otherwise be up for unchecked commercial development. Homes that border open space land have an opportunity to support that 'transitional edge', as a place for plant and animal diversity. Native and pollinator-friendly perennials line the dry creek bed, with water runoff benefiting the plants. Keeping a 'natural look' with the landscape so that it flows to the open space was a key desire of the homeowner. The plants are still quite young here, but were selected so that full-grown they would not diminish the expansive views.
