The brief was to transform the apartment into a functional and comfortable home, suitable for everyday living; a place of warmth and true homeliness. Excitingly, we were encouraged to be brave and bold with colour, and so we took inspiration from the beautiful garden of England; Kent. We opted for a palette of French greys, Farrow and Ball's warm neutrals, rich textures and textiles. We hope you like the result as much as we did!

Here is an architecturally built house from the early 1970's which was brought into the new century during this complete home remodel by opening up the main living space with two small additions off the back of the house creating a seamless exterior wall, dropping the floor to one level throughout, exposing the post an beam supports, creating main level on-suite, den/office space, refurbishing the existing powder room, adding a butlers pantry, creating an over sized kitchen with 17' island, refurbishing the existing bedrooms and creating a new master bedroom floor plan with walk in closet, adding an upstairs bonus room off an existing porch, remodeling the existing guest bathroom, and creating an in-law suite out of the existing workshop and garden tool room.

The exterior of what looks like a vernacular Hamptons shingle cottage, designed by architect Blaze Makoid, is intentionally deceiving. For the interiors, Axis Mundi typically decided not to play by the rules. Instead of de rigeur nautical artifacts, floppy sofas and wicker furniture, the firm responded to Makoid’s all-white interior envelope by injecting rooms with comfortable modern elegance that’s more contemporary Cap Ferrat than Eastern Long Island. Clean furniture silhouettes—from Cassina, Poltrona Frau and B&B Italia—a Massimo Vitali beach scene, a Moooi chandelier and industrial finishes (such as the steel of the fireplace surround and the anodized aluminum of a sleek Bulthaup kitchen) spark a creative tension between indoors and out. The gray palette provides a quiet backdrop for the nature outside, except for the master suite, where custom oak panels and blue shades create a reassuring warmth conducive to sleep. The client wanted a dressing room that felt like she was walking into a smart boutique showroom. We put her lovely bags on display and created an island to put clothes on when she was dressing. The island drawers open in both directions so that they can be opened from both sides of the dressing room. The bespoke door handles are made of Walnut dropped in resin. They match the gorgeous solid Walnut that we used to create the carcass cabinetry. The internal drawers are solid Walnut with dovetail joints and the exterior is spray lacquered and easy to clean. Pendant lighting over the island and vanity creates a fresh, light feel in the morning and some shadows and atmosphere at night.

We wanted to take away the narrow, long feel of this bathroom and brighten it up. We moved the bath to the end of the room and used this beautiful herringbone tile to add detail and warmth.

We were engaged to create luxurious and elegant bathrooms and powder rooms for this stunning apartment at Birchgrove. We used calacatta satin large format porcelain tiles on the floor and walls exuding elegance. Stunning oval recessed shaving cabinets and dark custom vanities provided all the storage our clients requested. Recessed towels, niches, stone baths, brushed nickel tapware, sensor lighting and heated floors emanated opulent luxury. Our client's were delighted with all their bathrooms.
