In one corner you have planters packed with seasonal vegetables that can be picked, rinsed and served, all within about 10 footsteps. Want some protein with that? No problem. The outdoor kitchen is set to feed a crowd, all while engaging friends over the bar, and into the dining area. Here, with built-in retractable pergola canopies, you can control your environment to whatever shade, sun, or night sky setting you desire. And then, when you can eat no more, kick-back and relax in the comfy, heated lounge seating area.

Entertaining is truly important to this family so, after downsizing their home, they wanted to maximise their new outdoor space to allow for visiting families, and complement it with a minimalist garden that matched their new location. There was also the extra challenge of finding a set of plants that would thrive in the sandy soils and salty winds. To begin with, we excavated the site to achieve the right levels and centred the garden around a beautiful granite water feature, framed with Australian hardwood benching, timeless granite paving and charcoal pebbles. The garden was built to reflect the coastal location, using a mixture of Treasure Flower, Mat Rush, NZ Christmas Bush, Grass Trees, Coastal Rosemary and the Purple-Leafed Sticky Hop Bush – with stainless steel light fittings providing a subtle, modern contrast. The end result was a natural courtyard dominated by earthy, coastal tones complemented with crisp modern finishes – and a set of plants that would thrive in the surrounds.

This compact, urban backyard was in desperate need of privacy. We created a series of outdoor rooms, privacy screens, and lush plantings all with an Asian-inspired design sense. Elements include a covered outdoor lounge room, sun decks, rock gardens, shade garden, evergreen plant screens, and raised boardwalk to connect the various outdoor spaces. The finished space feels like a true backyard oasis.

This small back garden had more than its share of issues to address. From the narrow angled site, to the slope of the ground, lack of privacy, public drains, aging existing retaining walls and deck, underground electrical wiring, and difficult access, it really had it all! The clients wanted a leafy secluded spot, where they could relax, entertain and feel immersed in nature. They also wanted a small productive area for some herbs and fruit trees. A garden shed was required and a means of access through from the front garden, although privacy was to be important. The old deck was removed and replaced with beautiful vitex decking. This new deck connect the rooms of the house opening onto the and then wraps itself around the house, effectively managing the worst of the slope and creating clear symmetry within the angled boundaries. A central retained bed with a feature flowering cherry tree creates a generous boardwalk and makes the decking feel part of the garden. A privacy screen and considered planting increases privacy. A series of oversize platform stairs lead up to the highest part of the garden, which in time will be filled with raised beds for vegetable and herbs and dwarf fruit trees. Generous natural schist stepping stones connect the utility area of the garden to the decked area. The planting is designed to be leafy and green with soft white accents through the season. Beautiful feature trees include Prunus Shimidsu Sakura, Cercis Canadensis and Betula jacquemonti. Summer flowering perennials include alchemilla mollis, anenome japonica and hydrangea. Recently designed and constructed this small courtyard in Knutsford was completely un-useable for the clients and their young children. The brief when re-designing? “Create a garden that’s nice for the adults and fun for the kids, oh and we need plenty of storage too”. The new garden design features a slide down the new steps and the courtyard was surfaced with soft play surfacing to accommodate the children. Fixed seating, plenty of planters as well as an artificial green wall were all ticked off the adults wish list meaning the whole family were delighted with the end result.

After meeting with the client and deciding the color plate, a new design was made. Year interest with plenty of perennials blooming throughout the year.

A tranquil garden design teeming with herbs and medicinal plants. Visitors are encouraged to use the continuous path as an aid to walking meditation. Along the path one can appreciate the filigree forms of umbellifers and gossamer fennel leaves. Awareness of subtleties such as plant movement in a breeze and backlit petals is heightened. The layout of the garden is denominated by the path’s route which loops and circles to contain a circular water trough and round of thyme. This curved path is intersected at various points by a serpentine rill. Senses are heightened via the calming sound of flowing water, cushioned feel of camomile atop the seat and the uplifting fragrance of mint varieties.
