Italian-Inspired Kitchen

An Italianate home built by one of the city's founders, this previously remodeled Wisconsin residence radiates character and charm. But when it came to matching the rest of the home in form and function, the current kitchen just didn't cut it. Ready to say arevaderci to the time-worn design, the homeowners enlisted Sweeney Construction for the remodel and our designer Al Curran. Of all their to-dos, creating a useful, updated cocina while maintaining the home's integrity topped the list. To camouflage the slanted roof, Sweeney changed the kitchen ceiling from a wood-clad structure with skylights to a two-level coffered construction. The team also relocated a range, maintained the original maple floor and exposed brick on the chimney's backside, and elongated the kitchen. They also incorporated a two-seated snack bar, a spacious zone for meal prep, and a place where guests could congregate. Imbued with a warm patina, the soapstone counters are right at home in the vintage abode. Stacked cherry cabinetry accentuates the stepped ceiling, and carved legs on the island invoke the look of fine furniture. All in all, what before was a room lacking in appeal is now a handsome artisanal array that beckons guests to stay.
