I don't know much about the Palm Springs area, but in the past we have used a local well regarded Austin painting contractor gel stain garage doors to produce a faux wood stain look after installation of a painted door. It was pretty effective. I would call the local Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, etc paint stores for a contractor recommendation. We haven't done this in a while because the door manufacturers (in particular, Clopay) introduced some very nice factory applied finishes, but I'll bet you can find a local person who can do a fine job.
