Presumably it's a wooden staircase? In which case the only choices you really have are carpet, a runner with painted treads or painted treads on their own or to possibly face them with hardwood. You can also get rubber treads for stairs, but they're more for commercial use, although I have seen them in residential homes with painted treads.

How about using solid oak treads? These could be templated.
