Make the colour on the walls darker or lighter

You could paint the cabinets and change the knobs/handles on the doors

Would it be possible to swap out open areas for areas with doors and with perhaps frosted glass? In addition, maybe the trim around the frosted glass area could be painted a different color such as black--that would take you in a more contemporary direction. I agree that changing out the knobs would also help. You've got a start with the stainless steel. Granite backsplash and granite countertops perhaps? Or, glass tile backsplash? Keep all the old doors so if the new buyer wants to revert, he/she has the option.
