What flooring to do on stairs and landing?

We just bought a house that had carpeting on the stairs and landing. We ripped that out since it was old and we don't want carpet. The rest of the house has hardwood flooring. We are at a loss as to what to do with the stairs and landing? At first we thought we'd paint them but the particle board on the landing already has some chunks missing. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Hardwood on the landing and then paint the treads/risers. Or put down hardwood on the treads as well, and then paint the risers = very handsome.

Sorry but this is going to get expensive if you decide against carpet.

I agree, hardwood treads and painted risers would look great

We just went through this process ourselves. We decided to put an upgraded patterned carpet on the two half-flights of stairs and hardwood on the large landing, treating it almost like a small room. Our stairs were not in good enough condition to paint. Also, our elderly dog has trouble on uncarpeted stairs, and the price of hardwood plus stair runner was simply too much for us to justify. We decided to spend that money on something more fun than stairs. :)
