The common complaints with all sorts of projects, extensions, renovations, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, repairs etc. usually centre on Cost, Quality and Time. I find that good Communication between parties is key to these 3.

Depends entirely on client circumstance - as an architect I'd go for quality every time. BUT if a client isn't going to stay in that house long-term and it's not a very high-end area, quality is less important. Sometimes a family is running out of space and they'll sacrifice quality for increased floor area. Quality is also subjective so if a client wants a cheap floor material or cheaper windows, I'll have a conversation about what the compromise is (durability, look, sustainability etc etc) but ultimately it's their choice. Everyone wants their project done quickly but understanding that small builders can't always deliver that without additional cost is important.

It is the responsibility of the professional(s) to ensure that the clients expectations are met in terms of each of these criteria from the outset. Provided this is undertaken successfully, the client should not fell that they have compromised on their expectations at all. What all parties should be aiming to achieve is 'best value'; this is rarely the cheapest solution, but apportioning the budget correctly to reflect the client's aspirations.
