the simplest solution would be to use flat panel bi-fold doors. You could make them a neat feature by having them painted a bright accent color. Maybe pick up a color from a pillow or rug? I wouldn't recommend painting yourself unless you are talented at painting. A less than great paint job will make them seem cheap. A great paint job with a high shine finish will make them an asset to the space. Having bright pops of color is very popular now in modern design.
