The color is made up of an under coat of a stain and sealer with a paint that is wiped away. You see the stain coming through the paint. The paint is actually gray and there is a tint on the finish coat that makes it brown/black looking.

It's a fruitwood stain with gray paint. The finish coat is tinted, that changes the colors each time a layer is added.
