If the wood is going to be painted as in the photo, the wood species wouldn't matter that much. Just make sure it is sanded and prepped well. You could also make some cushions to sit on the top when entertaining and in need of more seating. We did not want to take the cubbies out into the room any further to preserve the floor space.
