9. This Chicago living room by Amy Kartheiser is a balanced blend of white and blue, even down to the blue veining in the white stone fireplace surround. The artwork by Linc Thelen above the fireplace pulls in the room’s two main colors, as does the geometric rug.

8. Concrete covers the floor and fireplace wall in the living room of interior designer Stephen Nash of ALL & NXTHING and his wife, Miranda. The room is part of a rear addition to their 1890s cottage in northeast London; the seating area was designed as a place to hang out near the cooking and dining areas.
A modular sofa sits in front of a wood-burning stove and a television on legs that Nash is particularly proud of. “It took me a while to convince Miranda to buy it,” he says. “But it’s the only TV I’ve seen that’s beautiful enough to have on show.”

7. Warm ivories and rich browns anchor this Spanish-style living room in Palm Springs, California, while pops of pink add fun, colorful accents. The space feels crisp and current thanks to the clean-lined furniture and contemporary fabrics, but Designer Michael Ostrow of Grace Home Furnishings also wanted to layer in a feeling of heritage. “The vintage pieces — torchieres, wall clock and table lamps — all add a texture and distinctiveness to the room that new items would not,” he says.
6. This living room in Stockholm reminds us why Scandinavian style is admired across the design world. Styled by Francos Corner, the relaxed minimalist space relies on a few key pieces and a color palette of white and cream. Layers of throw pillows and blankets in varying textures keep the design from feeling flat.
5. While our collection of popular photos features mostly subtle color contrasts, this living room by TRG Architects in the San Francisco Bay Area goes for a more dramatic pairing. White roman shades pop against black window frames, as do the mostly white accessories against dark charcoal bookcases. The graphic rug and throw pillows further tie the design together.

4. Designed by interior design firm Hills & Grant, the living room of this Lake Tahoe, California, mountain retreat feels remarkably fresh, with its soaring ceilings, streamlined furnishings and dimensional tile by Daniel Ogassian.
But the designers didn’t sacrifice function for form. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the spectacular landscape, an oversize cushy sofa provides a place to spread out after a day on the slopes, and a fireplace keeps everyone warm and cozy.

3. Designer Kieran Liebl says she pulled from her clients’ coastal New England roots when designing this new Shingle-style home in Minnesota. The living room features the layout and amenities of an open, contemporary home but showcases details often seen in classic coastal houses, including a beamed ceiling, stone fireplace surround and ocean-inspired colors. Glass fishing floats, vintage maps and other coastal decor reinforce the New England theme.
2. When designing their downtown Los Angeles loft, interior designer Gabrielle Aker of Oh beauty Interiors and her husband, Zack, took their time to completely personalize the space. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the living area, which features a custom bookcase that Zack built and filled with 1,000 works of collected literature.
To illuminate the space, Gabrielle hung 300 feet of string lights (plugged into multiple outlets) overhead. She opted for a looser, more messy arrangement, inspired by Italian countryside cafes. A homemade swing also hangs from the ceiling.

1. The most popular living room photo of 2018 goes to Nashville, Tennessee-based interior design studio Vernich Interiors. With its beamed cathedral ceilings, open layout and soft color scheme of tan with a pop of dusty blue, this sophisticated yet comfortable space offers plenty of design inspiration. A wall of French doors, framed by custom window treatments, connects the room to the outdoors and bathes the interior in natural light.
