This versatile piece Designer: Colorindio is ideal as a tablecloth, bed cover or a throw, bringing life to any room it's in. Handwoven on a pedal loom from 100% cotton by artisans from San Andres de Larrainzar, in the Southwestern Mexican state of Chiapas, it melds contemporary Latin American designs with traditional techniques and practices. It takes inspiration from the vibrant and flowing skirts of traditional Chiapanecan dress.
Pedal looms, imported by the first generations of Spanish settlers, are manually operated machines and are thus more demanding than their mechanical equivalents. This fact has contributed to their being primarily the preserve of men, unlike in many other cultures. Whilst requiring more energy to operate, pedal looms allow for the weaving of larger pieces than the widespread alternative, the backstrap loom. Due to this, they are largely used to weave tablecloths, bed covers, rugs and curtains.
