If you’re looking for ways to get your dining room ready for entertaining season, then look no further than these designs. Bold paint, a glamorous light fixture and graphic wallpaper are just a few of the features that can enhance your holiday dining atmosphere.
1. Teal Appeal
Designers: Laura Williams-Ulam and Courtney Heaton of Heaton + Williams
Location: Atherton, California
Size: 180 square feet (17 square meters); 12 by 15 feet
Homeowners’ request. “Our homeowners use their dining room on a daily basis for homework, work and casual meals, but also to entertain often,” designer Laura Williams-Ulam says. “It needed to be comfortable, with very comfortable chairs, and functional, but also we wanted a bit of glamour for entertaining.”
Main feature. Walls painted in Mayo Teal in a high-gloss finish by Benjamin Moore. “The jumping-off point was definitely the high-gloss paint on the walls,” Williams-Ulam says. “Everything else fell into place after that.”
Other special features. Custom chairs. Bright floral wall curtains.
Designer tip. “The most difficult part was the condition of the walls and achieving the correct smoothness before painting,” Williams-Ulam says. “It took quite a while to skim them to a level that would not show defects. You definitely have to consider the condition of the walls when using high-gloss or lacquer paints. Everything has to be smooth and even. The payoff is a lustrous wall color that, especially at night, reflects the chandelier and candlelight around the room, giving you the drama you want when entertaining.”

2. Wonderful Wallpaper
Designer: Kim Bailey Interiors
Location: Dallas
Size: 102 square feet (9.5 square meters); 8½ by 12 feet
Homeowners’ request. A unique modern dining room with better lighting, more storage and a vibe fit for entertaining.
Main feature. Graphic wallpaper.
Other special features. Custom cabinets painted in Naval by Sherwin-Williams. Chandelier with individual glass drops. Reeded detail on table edge.
Designer tip. “The custom cabinetry provides storage and helps balance the off-center window and bring symmetry to the room,” says designer Kim Bailey, whose clients found her through Houzz and collaborated with her using ideabooks to design seven rooms in their home.
“Uh-oh” moment. “There were three different white trim paint colors throughout the house, and all three were in the dining room,” Bailey says. “We had to pick the best white and repaint all throughout the home to match.”
Dining table: Modern Robards, Universal Furniture; chandelier: Bling, Robert Abbey

3. Blue Beauty
Designers: Kevin Spearman (interior designer) and Robert Dame Designs (architect)
Builder: Sims Luxury Builders
Location: Houston
Size: 285 square feet (26 square meters); 15 by 19 feet
Homeowners’ request. For this showcase house, the design-and-build team wanted to combine classic and old-world architectural and interior elements with clean, modern style. “This dining room was an important part of accomplishing that goal,” says Michael Sims, president of Sims Luxury Builders.
Main feature. The millwork, with its clean lines and dramatic color (Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball).
Other special features. Steel-and-glass-encased wine room. Champagne limestone fireplace. Three-arm light fixture designed by Serge Mouille. White oak hardwood flooring in varying widths (7 and 9 inches). Eleven-foot ceiling. Seven-inch crown molding.
Designer tip. “Don’t be afraid to incorporate surprising design elements, as we did with the bold color, the low-profile dining table and chairs, the ultramodern light fixture and a few of the nontraditional art pieces,” Sims says.
“Uh-oh” moment. “Our original paint color selection did not turn out as deep and rich as we had hoped,” Sims says. “We knew this element of the room had to be perfect, so we accepted the budget bust, reselected and finally got it just right.”

4. Fireside Fantasy
Designer: Marisa Lafiosca of ML Interior Designs
Location: Bay Head, New Jersey
Size: 315 square feet (29 square meters); 14 by 22½
Homeowners’ request. A space that could accommodate large groups of family members and overnight guests during the summer.
Main feature. Fireplace with shiplap surround.
Other special features. Large table with spacious seating for eight people. Chair cushions in indoor-outdoor fabric. Wide-plank quartersawn light oak floors. Beach view.
Designer tip. “We kept the walls and furnishings neutral to showcase the large canvases of art throughout the home,” designer Marisa Lafiosca says. “We also did minimal use of window treatments to maximize the view of the beach.”
Pendant: Darlana by E.F. Chapman in polished nickel, Visual Comfort; wall paint: Strong White in matte finish, Farrow & Ball; trim paint: Super White in satin finish, Benjamin Moore; ceiling paint: Super White in matte finish, Benjamin Moore

5. White Wonder
Designer: Phillips + Gilligan Interiors
Location: Downers Grove, Illinois
Size: 144 square feet (13 square meters); 12 by 12 feet
Homeowners’ request. Update the dining room to be more cohesive with the nearby formal living room. “The house is a foursquare with very traditional, beautiful architectural elements,” designer Leah Phillips says. “Our clients like both modern and traditional interiors, so our goal was to blend the two.”
Main feature. White chairs. “The clients wanted to keep their dining table and possibly the chairs, but the room felt very wood-heavy. So we knew in order to freshen up the space, we needed to contrast the table with lighter, brighter dining chairs,” Phillips says. “The pops of white from the chairs and the buffet worked perfectly with the beautiful old trim and instantly lightened up the space.”
Other special features. Powder blue walls (Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore). Original window. “The original window on the back wall is such a beautiful architectural feature,” Phillips says. “The room just would not be the same without it.”
Designer tip. “Custom drapery isn’t always necessary,” Phillips says. “Our trick, which we used here, is to use drapery rings whenever we aren’t doing custom window treatments. They instantly elevate the look of ready-made panels and are very cost-effective.”

6. Cheery ‘Chair Rail’
Designer: Emily Griffin Design
Location: Toronto
Size: 145 square feet (13 square meters); 10 by 14½ feet
Homeowners’ request. Expand openings into the living room and hallway to let in more light. “What we did do was totally brighten it up and turn the space from a dark, uninviting room to a whimsical, eclectic room where the family eats daily and where they entertain on the weekends,” designer Emily Griffin says.
Main feature. “The most significant design detail in the room is how we treated the walls in what we like to call a modern take on a chair rail,” Griffin says. “At 44 inches from the ground, we painted the walls, baseboards and some window and door trim in a dark navy blue (Naval by Sherwin-Williams) and then painted everything above it a creamy white (Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball). It introduces color but doesn’t darken the room.”
Other special features. Oak floors and table. Teak chairs with leather strapping. Lacquered white console table. Antique wheat-sheaf sconces. Gilded mirror. Wool rug layered on top of a sisal rug. Papier-mâché light fixture. “The room is truly a mix of textures, styles and materials,” Griffin says. “By mixing all these things together, the room feels more relaxed and less formal while at the same time warm and inviting.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “The room prior to the renovation had no crown molding,” Griffin says. “The rest of the house has beautiful old plaster moldings. So we chose a complementary molding from a catalog without seeing a sample — dumb, dumb, dumb. When it went up, it looked way too big and chunky compared to the original. So we chopped off part of the bottom section and in the end it looked really sharp.”
