Create a Mini Winter Wonderland
Use our template — or make your own — to bring the magic of a snowy landscape to your holiday decor
Is your tabletop or mantel in need of a little magic? Here’s how to create a charming winter scene with a small bell jar and everyday craft supplies.
Materials and Tools
- Bell jar (ours was about 4 inches wide)
- Colored card stock
- Tracing paper
- Scissors or a craft knife
- Compass
- White chalkboard marker
- Craft glue
- Paintbrush
- Pencil
1. Draw your own design or print the template above. We used an A4 sheet of paper printed in landscape (horizontal) mode. Click on the image to enlarge it before printing.
2. Transfer the image onto card stock. We copied the design onto the tracing paper with pencil, then transferred that image by placing the paper sketch-side down on top of the cardstock and retracing the image on the back side. The pressure transfers the first pencil marks to the colored paper.
3. Cut out all your pieces. For a bell jar about 4 inches wide, we created seven fir trees, one deer and eight snowdrifts (three large, two medium size and three small).
4. Using the blade of the scissors, form a crease in the center of each tree. This will give them a little more dimension and will help them stand up.
5. With a compass, measure the inside of the base of your bell jar. Then draw its circumference on white paper and cut out the circle. This will line the base of your scene.
6. It’s time to put all the players together. Brush a small amount of glue onto the bottom edge of each element in your design. Arrange everything as you like.
7. Add embellishments (a red nose for the stag, ornaments for the trees) as desired.
8. On the outside of the bell jar, draw snowflakes with a white chalkboard marker. You will be able to wash them off later.
9. Top your scene with the snowy cover.
You can create more trees and characters to add to your tabletop as desired.
