“Forsite Studio handled the design/construction of a detached carport and accessory dwelling unit, plus additions to main house. A professional, creative and conscientious team, they were easy to work with and it was a fun project. The apartment was featured on the city's annual "cool house" tour for energy-efficient homes. It is beautifully designed and is currently rented for top dollar. I highly recommend Forsite Studio.”

“François is our architect and has been planning our house with us from the ground up. We wanted a very contemporary, ADA compliant single story house, with some very unique design features. François was (is) a pleasure to work with, he understood our desires and translated our vision onto paper pretty quickly. We went through several renditions and got the final design completed within our budget. The house is mostly self sufficient with grid tied solar, geothermal and rainwater collection as our utilities and a very tight envelope for overall efficiency. François' expertise and understanding of these features made it possible to have all of them fully integrated from the beginning. Detail design, including building orientation, roof overhang etc. were calculated by him, and virtually modeled so we could see for ourselves how the sun would affect our quality of life. We are currently in the building phase; François attends all construction meetings and comes up with great solutions should the contractor run into a problem. He has a great eye for details and we almost exclusively rely on his insights and recommendation, from finishes over colors to fixtures, and a good understanding of your personal taste. As an example, when we decided to have some brick accent walls, he worked diligently on finding us the brick we imagined, but had not seen anywhere. When he finally showed us the sample we were looking exactly at what we had been describing to him from look, color and type of finish. As a person, François is easy to communicate with, replies to inquiries in a timely manner and listens well to your concerns or opinion. He will speak his opinion, but in a manner that you have the room to weigh his input and it is OK with you not following his recommendation. He also explains his suggestions or decisions clearly at a level of complexity that meets your level of understanding.”

“The Katz Builders team is very professional. We have worked on dozens of projects together over a span of over 25 years (my firm draws the plans and Katz does the construction) and every one of my clients who has used Katz for the construction project has been very pleased with quality, professionalism and service. The level of personal attention and care they provide is unparalleled. In one remodel, for instance, they painstakingly removed the original wood casing from doors and reinstalled it after the remodel was finished. Their tile installer did my own floors and I was extremely impressed with how carefully he and his lead installer planned the layout to make sure that the tile was centered on several different axes as well as ensuring no small slivers of tile at edges and other subtle things I would never have noticed had they done it incorrectly. If something "doesn't seem right" about plans we have provided, the Katz team always call to make sure they get it right rather than "winging it" in the field risking misinterpretation of our intent. They have used many of the same sub-contractors the entire time I have known them which means to me that they have loyal sub-contractors and you will get consistent and high quality results from them. And, once again, I want to mention that in all these years I have not once had a homeowner come back to me and complain about them as their builder. That is very rare in this business.”

“I have worked with Heather McKinney on the following projects: Canyon House , Austin, Texas 1984, a residence on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia 2003 twice on a Ranch House in Stephenville, Texas 2008 and earlier, referred her firm McKinney York to a client in San Antonio, Texas and worked on this new residence in Shavano Park 2006. This year I was referred by this firm to an Austin client to arrange furniture and bring in an picture hanging consultant.I was most impressed with the spaces, materials, and lighting in this remodel. McKinney York Artachitects pays great attention to detail, and has the highest level of expertise in green and sustainable design. The principals and staff are even tempered and good natured. “We came to Barley & Pfeiffer after exploring a lot of options for our old but not-distinctive house. We were impressed with the way Peter Pfeiffer's house, which we saw on a home tour, embodied sustainable building practices without looking funky. We wanted a project that would incorporate the details that we loved from our old house with smart, energy efficient construction and a contemporary layout suitable for our growing family. We found that Barley & Pfeiffer as a firm provided all the skills we needed to come out at the end with the house we wanted. Alan's design skills, Peter's building science knowledge, and Scott's detailed project management work all combined to give us a beautiful house that works really well for our family, has very low maintenance requirements, and consumes dramatically less energy than most other houses, both of a similar size and much smaller. The money we have not spent on heating and cooling this house in the past seven years could well pay for a new car. If you are going to spend the money to substantially renovate an existing home or build a new home, think carefully about what it will cost to maintain what you end up with. "Green building" is a trend now and many builders and architects claim to be "green," but few firms have the depth of expertise and years of dedication to sustainable building that Barley & Pfeiffer can provide. What you spend up front on excellent design and construction management will be recouped many times over in savings on the cost of living and maintenance. It soon became apparent that we had made right choice, as Kimberly was instrumental in not only helping us design a home, but actually heal from the experience of losing everything. I'll never forget her first walk-through of the destroyed family home - my wife and I were still devastated and the destruction around us just made us sad. Kimberly began to talk about what was possible, what she could do with the space, and how we could take this tragedy and turn it into a dream home.
