Keith Hunter Architect / Builder

My wife and I are in the process of building our out of the ordinary home on a family farm. About 2 years ago I envisioned a home with a unique design that we could enjoy the views of our land and lake with our family and friends. I created my own drawings and reached out to Keith recently for help in finalizing my ideas. I have worked with Keith on projects for my company and appreciated his vision and attention to detail. I wanted that for my one-of-a-kind home and got those qualities plus a genuine eagerness to be involved with our project. Keith's experience and creativity have intertwined so well with our visions. Keith expanded on my drawings and has designed our home from the ground up, he has provided us with drawings and 3D computer renderings on many occasions as we work through the process of what we want. Of course we have a budget and have been thankful for Keith's suggestions to help keep within our monetary boundaries. We will be breaking ground on our home soon and are thankful for the guidance, expert advice and genuine enthusiasm Keith has provided along the way. And since he will be our builder too, he and the architect should get along just fine!

My husband and I wanted to make some major changes to our new house before moving into it. To decide who we would hire, we met with several certified architects in our new home, going from room to room, discussing our vision and possibilities for changes. Keith Hunter was the obvious choice for several reasons. He has vast experience with a wide variety of architectural structures and styles. He listened carefully to what we wanted and offered various suggestions more possibilities. Once hired, Keith provided us with detailed drawings in a timely manner, and spent time discussing each feature. It was invaluable to also have Keith as our general contractor for the renovations. We lived out of state during most of the work, so it was reassuring to know that Keith used subcontractors that he knew personally and trusted their work. Keith worked hard to stay close to our budget, while giving us the finest products and workmanship. The renovations are finished inside and out and they are great! People passing by stop to tell us how beautiful the exterior changes are. The interior is airy, elegant, and the master bath is to die for! I the highly recommend Keith Hunter as an architect and a contractor.

I am a homebuilder in Richmond Va. My wife and I approached Keith after seeing a home he had designed in Ashland Virginia. His approach was remarkable. He listened to our ideas for at least two of the initial meetings then set to paper a conceptual design that pulled together our sometimes conflicting desires perfectly. The plans were complete, concise and detailed. We will definitely use Keith again for our custom home clients.

Mr Hunter was referred to me by a contractor. In saying this I am always skeptical as to the good and the bad dealing with architects. When Keith completed our drawings and advised us of everything that was pertinent to the job I was relieved. His estimates and plans were amazing and one of a kind. It wasn't like these other dime a dozen houses. It was a craftsman with character and charisma. He has assisted me every step of the way when he didn't have to and gave me knowledge that I so appreciate. If you are looking for an architect who will throw you up a cookie cutter house then don't call keith..if you are looking for an architect/structural engineer who will plan the house of your dreams then he is your man...I recommend him to all..

Keith designed and built a garage for us, and he created a master bath suite addition with a porch below. Both were well-designed to fit our historic turn of the century house. He knew our budget was somewhat constricted, but we still wanted high quality design and workmanship. For example, we ended up saving money by buying salvaged windows and flooring but spending more on skilled carpentry. When his carpenter could not create or buy a molding we needed, he would even create it in his own professional shop. He really got into it. He was willing to do a "turn-key" product but he understood that it was not our style. We wanted to be involved in the whole process. Lots of architects would balk at that, but he seemed to enjoy the interaction. The result was worth it. The garage (which we call my husband's "man cave") is really attractive. He based his design on a smaller shed in the neighborhood that had been built around the same time as our house, with a cupola, double doors facing the house and a very nice roll-up door on the side for the cars. He paid particular attention to how the windows and the fascia worked with each other and matched the house. With the screened porch, he matched the columns on our porch and figured an ingenious way to attach the screen frames. The bathroom/closet area could have been awkward, given the constraints that we put on it--it had to go to the rear, not the side because we wanted to save the windows in the bedroom. But he managed to make some long halls look just right because he broke them up into areas. He was careful about his subcontractors. The carpenters he hired were wonderful. Their little details that seemed inconsequential made a big difference in how the rooms fit with the original master bedroom. All in all, the whole process was fun and the result was great. I cannot recommend him enough.

My wife and I were married in 2005. We decided to invest the proceeds from the sale of my prior home into an upgrade of her home at 504 Duncan Street in Ashland, Virginia. The property was a solid brick house, built sometime in the 1950's. We wanted to add a first floor master suite, a new screen porch and a new garage. Our concern was that such an add on would stick out like a "sore thumb” if we did not have the right architect to design the addition. We hired Keith Hunter to help us with this rather extensive upgrade. Keith designed the additions and changes for us and then oversaw the construction work. At the end of the day there wee several things notable about the finished product. The additions blended in beautifully with the old house. People, including neighbors, do not realize the master suite and porch have been added to the house. Keith located the matching brick. One cannot tell which part of the house is old and which part is new. The functionality of Keith's design is perfect. In the ten years since the work was completed we have never had to say " Oh, I wish he had designed it this way...." We have no doubt that Keith's design work and his overseeing the of the construction resulted in significant savings in the final cost of these additions. On final, important note: We found Keith Hunter to be a direct and honest architect who listened to what we wanted. He did not try to build a "Keith Hunter Exhibit" but rather he designed a home that matched the sensibilities of my wife and me. Keith was always very professional in his dealings with us and we could depend on getting straight answers on any issues that arose. The services of an architect are not free. But, at the end of the day, good architects, who also have construction knowledge and can manage the work as well, are going to result in a far superior end result. Keith Hunter and Associates helped my wife and I with the design and construction of a garage and the renovation of interior space to create a mud room, laundry room and handicapped accessible bathroom at our home. The design of the garage/workshop was well conceived and aesthetically appealing, complementing our home, originally built in 1915. The interior renovations completely changed a former coal/oil furnace area into an efficient, modern bathroom with shower (on first floor), tank less hot water heater and natural gas furnace. There was also space for a laundry room with sink and a mud room with seat and hooks. Keith was very helpful in making design and material decisions. His sub contractors were competent and timely. While the project has taken longer than expected, we were well satisfied with the final product.

He designed our beautiful home. We worked well together in the design and changes along the way. He is just finishing the building of our home. Keith is very easy to work with, responds quickly to last minute changes. Very professional.
