Not just a review. Here is our testimony. If you told me my lawn would one day be lush and green AND without a lot of watering, I’d laugh and say “That hasn’t been the case for a long time.” Now these two seemingly opposing concepts are about to come true. Joseph Gallegos, inventor of the underground aquifer pipes, a student of horticulture, and a scientist by training, had a little something to do with this. My journey started when I typed in “greywater irrigation” on Youtube. Greyhub, Paso Robles, California had a system invented by an Australian hydro-engineer, but it was not for lawns. They recommended me to Grey4Green.com a local Southern California company that has a system specifically for grass. I wanted a lawn. But for last 11 years I couldn’t bring myself to let the sprinklers run daily or even weekly, so I used buckets and captured water from sinks, tubs and showers. When Joseph texted right back, I couldn’t see how my conundrum would be solved. Our first meeting with our longtime friend and seasoned plumber, Israel Galarza, and Joseph went great. Our out of pocket cost would have been $400.00 dollars more than the conventional irrigation Israel would have installed. With the conservation aspect of reusing our shower water, I had to give this DIY a try. First we needed to dig trenches to place the aquifer pipes. Connection of pipes and fittings would then be installed and connected to our shower and tub egress under the house. Next a filter conceived by Joseph placed in front of our house would be connected to these pipes. From there water would be dispersed by gravitational flow into our future lawn. The direct gravity flow with no tanks or pumps keeps this all inclusive greywater irrigation “a simple system” per California Plumbing code of under 250 gallons per day. Particular to my job on this DIY was digging, the most universal and dare I say easiest part that anyone can do. Secretly feeling like a kid in a sandbox, I opted for a hand shovel. After my husband and son dug a 2 inch deep by 4 inch wide trench we’d fill with gently used water to soften the subsurface dirt, I got into digging, scraping and carving 12 inch deep trenches around and through rocks and roots. To me, this was a more ergonomic way. If I’m scaring anyone away, I must remind there are excavators and professionals who can do this in a day with axes, hoes, and machinery versus my primitive ways. Joseph and his team, Santos, Evan and Samuel were awesome, making head-ways in a day that took me weeks. Now, we are about 90% done with our first DIY project and I can’t wait to see how my lawn will take off, documenting it each step of the way.
