We began with a structurally sound 1950’s home. The owners sought to capture views of mountains and lake with a new second story, along with a complete rethinking of the plan. Basement walls and three fireplaces were saved, along with the main floor deck. The new second story provides a master suite, and professional home office for him. A small office for her is on the main floor, near three children’s bedrooms. The oldest daughter is in college; her room also functions as a guest bedroom. A second guest room, plus another bath, is in the lower level, along with a media/playroom and an exercise room. The original carport is down there, too, and just inside there is room for the family to remove shoes, hang up coats, and drop their stuff. The focal point of the home is the flowing living/dining/family/kitchen/terrace area. The living room may be separated via a large rolling door. Pocketing, sliding glass doors open the family and dining area to the terrace, with the original outdoor fireplace/barbeque. When slid into adjacent wall pockets, the combined opening is 28 feet wide.

A love affair with the ocean and coastal get-aways inspired the makeover of this breezy and inviting hearth room. Creating a dramatic focal point, the fireplace was custom-built with a stacked stone surround, stone corbels, and flush limestone hearth and is flanked by built-in cabinets topped with matching limestone. Covered in off-white indoor-outdoor fabric, the matching side chairs invite conversation with those seated on the curvaceous green sofa featuring turquoise blue welt. The industrial cart as coffee table is a punch of surprise while also adding to the easy-breezy nature of the room. Additional blue accents appear on the Chinese garden stool and the framed tropical-themed painting behind the sofa. We loved staging this room. We expected a white room, but when we walked in, we saw this accent wall color. By adding black and white wall art pieces, we managed to pull it off. These are real MCM furniture pieces and they fit into this new remodel beautifully.

The feature wall in the living area sets the tone for the apartment. Weiss took advantage of the vast wall space by creating a gallery display of art. Spanning the gamut of styles and origins, the pieces are hung asymmetrically, lending to the organic feel of the space. While the thought of fitting all of her artwork was a bit daunting in the beginning, this is now Weiss's favorite spot in her home. Photo: Shaun Cammack The goal of the project was to create a modern log cabin on Coeur D’Alene Lake in North Idaho. Uptic Studios considered the combined occupancy of two families, providing separate spaces for privacy and common rooms that bring everyone together comfortably under one roof. The resulting 3,000-square-foot space nestles into the site overlooking the lake. A delicate balance of natural materials and custom amenities fill the interior spaces with stunning views of the lake from almost every angle.
