How to choose sofa, 2018.10.21
Bedside Table and chair; Pull up a perch. Midcentury-style armchairs are an integral part of the era’s design ethos. These elegant pieces, made of smoothly carved wood, are both beautiful and comfortable. This classic version sits snugly in the corner and ties in with the bedside table. The monochrome artwork and angled lamp offset the simple curves of the chair.
11. Consider a convertible coffee-and-dining table. Space is often hard to come by in New York, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up the comforts of more spacious living. In this 400-square-foot apartment, the homeowners used a table from Ligne Roset that can be lowered to coffee table height for everyday use and raised to dining table height for meals
Customize for the perfect piece. Having difficulty finding the perfect seat combination? Look into ordering a custom sofa. Many manufacturers can change sofa dimensions and cushion configurations to suit your needs. For example, the sofa in this picture typically comes with two seat cushions, but it was customized to have a bench seat instead.
Three seat cushions provide an individual spot for three people to sit. While many traditional styles have three seat cushions, this look is also found on more modern styles. Three cushions may not look as clean-lined as a bench seat or two cushions, but this is a great choice if you want to maximize seating space
Final consideration: How many cushions? A single seat cushion is called a bench seat. You’ll see it on many modern styles, but bench seats are also a great way to update a more traditional frame. This style has several benefits: You can squeeze a bunch of people on your sofa without someone having to sit on a crack, you won’t lose change or toys between the cushions. It also transforms into a great makeshift bed for overnight guests. The negative: These cushions are a little more difficult to flip or rotate.
4. Inner-spring. The most supportive seat cushions will have an inner-spring core (imagine the inside of a mattress) instead of a foam core. The spring core is often wrapped in down, but you can also find it with a fiber wrapping. This option is great if you want a supportive seat and don’t want to worry about a cushion holding its shape.
2. Down-wrapped. If you like to sink down into your sofa, go with a down-wrapped cushion. This type of cushion consists of a foam core wrapped in down. You’ll still get a nice, soft seat but the cushions won’t flatten out as quickly as 100 percent down. That said, they still may require frequent flipping and rotating to keep their shape.
The inner life of seat cushions. There are a few different ways to construct a seat cushion, and the inside design determines a seat’s level of support and comfort. Most cushions are constructed with a supportive core surrounded by a soft layer. It’s the materials in those parts that determine the firmness of the cushion. While each manufacturer has its own seat cushion options, most are a variation of the following four types.
Seat depth and design. Don’t forget to consider the size of your room when choosing seat depth. A super deep sofa doesn’t work well in a small space — it just looks out of place. If a deep seat is important to you but you have a small space, go for an inside depth of 23 inches. And to avoid having a comically large-looking sofa, balance a deeper seat with either low arms or visible legs. This keeps your space looking open instead of overwhelmed by the sofa.
Seat Depth for Sofa: If you like to sit upright in your sofa, choose a shorter seat depth. The exact number will vary depending on your height, but 20 to 22 inches tends to be a good range for most people to sit up comfortably. To figure out the seat depth you prefer, sit in a few different sofas and measure the one that works best for you.
The importance of seat depth. When shopping for a comfortable sofa, one of the most important things to pay attention to is the inside seat depth. This is different from the overall depth, which is the distance from the back of the sofa to the front. The inside seat depth is measured from the front of the seat to the back cushion. An average sofa’s seat depth ranges from 21 to 24 inches, but you can find many options outside of that range.
The wingback armchair is reinvented. Our love of all things midcentury isn’t exactly waning, but it’s definitely evolving. This was evident in many of the pieces on exhibit — check out British designer Charlene Mullen’s Marimekko-esque plates and Scandi folk-style illustrations — but most noticeably in the form of the wingback chair. A midcentury classic, this instantly recognizable seat, with “wings” at head height, has had something of a reinvention, and versions of it were plentiful. This curvy pastel take on the chair by Republic of Fritz Hansen is just one example. Elsewhere, there were fresh, boxy versions by James UK; extra-tall backs at Knightsbridge Furniture; streamlined, modern designs by Icons of Denmark; and super-cushioned incarnations by Norr11.
Her clients love wine and had saved their wine crates. Taylor had the idea to use the crates on the ceiling. She arranged the pieces on the floor and then had an Amish carpenter install them. “We embraced the different thicknesses of the wood pieces and fit it all together like a jigsaw puzzle,” she says. She added mini LED lights within the crate ceiling to contribute to the lighting scheme.
Don't get down for cottage, not enough support Down-Filled Cushions The softest cushion fill is 100 percent down. Down-filled back cushions allow you to sink back into them. As a result, they aren’t all that supportive. The other downside (pun intended) is that they require frequent fluffing since they show any indentation left by a user.
What Type of Cushion Fill Is Right for You? The style of back cushion isn’t the only decision you have to make. You also need to consider what you want the cushions to be filled with. You can go with down, fiber or a combination of both.
A loose back sofa does provide a comfy spot to nestle into, but it's also the least supportive back cushion style.
Loose Back Cushions The third style of back cushion is loose or scatter back. In this style, the back of the sofa is covered in many large throw pillows. They cover the back of the sofa completely but aren’t cut to fit perfectly in place. This style has a definite casual vibe.
This cushion back sofa, on the other hand, looks more formal thanks to its contrasting welt and exposed legs.
Designwise, cushion back sofas are versatile. They can look either casual or formal depending on the style of the sofa and the look of the room. This space features a more casual version of a cushion back sofa.
Cushion Back Cushions The next style, cushion back, is probably the most common type of sofa back. Cushions are cut to fit the sofa perfectly, creating a softer spot to lean against.
There are various options with a tight back sofa, such as tufting or ribbing. Thanks to their clean, tailored lines, tight back sofas lend themselves to a more formal look.
Tight Back Cushions With a tight back cushion, the back cushion is completely integrated into the sofa back. It generally provides a firmer feel, no plumping or fluffing of the back cushions is needed, and it always looks neat. This is the most supportive style. (Adding lumbar pillows, as seen here, can provide even more support.)
What Type of Cushion is Right for You? The next thing to consider is the kind of back cushion for your sofa. There are three different types: tight back, cushion back and loose back. Each has its pros and cons.
In a room with a wall of windows, a sofa with a taller back might block the view. A streamlined sofa with a lower back height is the best choice here.
Overall back height, which is the distance from the floor to the top of the back cushions, can be important when considering how the sofa will look in the room. For example, if you have windows or other architectural details to work around, a sofa with a tall overall back height may not be ideal.
If you prefer to lie down on your sofa and rest your head against the arm, then you don’t need to worry as much about back height. You can just focus on what style looks best in the room.
A sofa with a taller back (where the inside back height is 18 inches or more) provides a spot to rest your head when you’re sitting. This is beneficial if you’re the kind of person who likes to lounge back while watching TV or reading.
How Will You Use Your Sofa? The inside back height, which is the height from the top of the seat cushion to the top of the back, can have a big impact on how comfortable a sofa feels to you. Therefore, it’s important to consider what you’ll be using your sofa for before you select it.

6. Ditch the overstuffed college-era sofa. This may be rather obvious, but it’s important: Avoid oversized and heavy-feeling furniture. It will take over and make the room feel smaller. Instead, opt for low-profile, streamlined furniture, particularly sofas. Low-profile furniture essentially means low to the ground. A low-profile sofa, for example, means there’s a small distance from the floor to the sofa seat. From a design standpoint, this usually means smaller sofa legs, streamlined cushions or a narrow base. Use the extra wall space your low-profile sofa provides to balance the space with wall decor that starts low and goes high. Great examples are hanging a large-scale art piece or arranging a vertical row of shelves that draws the eye up.

7. Burl wood can be laid-back and beachy. A thick slab of burl wood makes a sturdy piece of furniture that you don’t have to worry about putting your feet on. (You might want some coasters to prevent water stains, though.) Mixed with beachy blue stripes and casual white slipcovered furniture, a burl wood table becomes the centerpiece of an easygoing hangout room.

Table . Paint your chairs. Choose something fresh and clean or bright and bold. While you can always go neutral to be on the safe side, chairs can offer the perfect opportunity to experiment. If there’s an edgier color you’ve had your eye on, go for it — you can always repaint later.
1. Reupholster. Freshen up tired chairs. With seats like these, all you need is new fabric and a staple gun. This print is actually a vintage rug that’s been cleverly repurposed.
