Types of Locks 1. Lock pins. This simple, inexpensive device includes a pin attached to a small chain. The chain is fastened to the window frame and a hole is drilled through both the upper and lower window sashes of a double-hung window. When the pin is inserted into the hole, it goes through both sashes, preventing either one from sliding open. Holes can be drilled in two places to allow the pin to be inserted while the window is completely closed, or when slightly open to allow for ventilation.

The windows were the old Marvin Casemaster, which I think Marvin has phased out. The windows were based on the widest standard size awning available, I think they were a little over 3 feet wide. These windows were factory mulled together. Every manufacturer has different limitations on how large a span they can accommodate with factory mulls for window pressure and other concerns, including whether they can feasibly be shipped on a truck. Other architectural and structural factors also need to be considered when sizing the window openings - what do you need to support above the windows, etc. There is not steadfast rule of how many windows can be mulled, it will depend on the design of the space. If windows cannot be mulled together at the factory because of structural or other conditions, a structural engineer needs to be consulted to size the opening, and design the support between the windows.
