“Another thing I do when we are working in a smaller footprint is I always panel the appliances,” Dupes says. The refrigerator and dishwasher are paneled, and a speed oven-microwave tucked into the island is paneled too. That helps the eye travel around the kitchen cabinetry without stopping at appliances. “It really helps the space feel larger,” she says. A third trick Dupes uses to make a small kitchen feel open is to choose clear glass globes on pendant lights. Here, the pendants have a pretty, slim brass rod that coordinates with the cabinet hardware. This kitchen is very close ot mine and has great remodel ideas!
A 32-inch undermount workstation single-bowl stainless steel sink has an integrated ledge and accessories including a solid bamboo cutting board and a multipurpose roll-up dish drying rack. A paneled double dish drawer sits to the lower right of the sink. A matte black single-handle pull-down kitchen faucet with touch technology coordinates with a black metal pendant above and other black details. (The kitchen also includes new LED recessed ceiling lights that the photographer removed from these photos to help focus attention on other design elements.) A large dish pantry cabinet on the right features doors that slide in when open. It sits right on the countertop.
A 30-inch self-cleaning double oven with a touch-screen interface sits to the left of the 36-inch integrated paneled French door refrigerator with bottom freezer. A tall pantry cabinet with three doors stands to the left of the double oven and includes a section with rollout shelves for easy access to dry goods. A deep drawer below the double oven stores glass and plastic food containers. The upper cabinet above the double oven has dividers inside for storing cookie sheets and baking pans. An existing sliding glass door on the left connects the kitchen to a backyard deck.
Meanwhile, a palette of white and wood elements delivers inviting, warm style. Two substantial custom oak cabinet sections in a natural finish are featured prominently. The volume on the left contains wall ovens, a paneled fridge and storage. On the right is dish storage. The center-bottom cabinets have a sunny white finish (Greek Villa, Sherwin-Williams). White walls with warm greige undertones (Shoji White, Sherwin-Williams), decorative wood beams, a white oak band on the range hood and wood-look luxury vinyl plank flooring round out the palette.
homeowners, eventually landing on a bright and soothing style with a blue-painted vanity (French Moire by Sherwin-Williams) and varying shades of blue tile set in a herringbone pattern for the shower. Glaister also used Houzz Pro business software for billing, client notifications and to collect a review for this project. The flooring is creamy beige 16-by-32-inch glazed porcelain tiles in a matte finish. “That line of tile has a good amount of grip, so it’s not a slippery surface at all,” Glaister says. “It was our opportunity to do something lighter, brighter and more practical.” The shower flooring is the same tile in a 2-by-2-inch size for more grout lines that create additional grip. Vanity: VPM Custom Cabinets; floor tile: Rock Crystal collection in Everest, 16 by 32 inches and 2 by 2 inches, Bedrosians Tile and Stone; blue tile: Cloe in Baby Blue, 2½ by 8 inches, Bedrosians Tile and Stone; wall, ceiling and trim paint: Swiss Coffee, Kelly-Moore Paints
While the appliance layout changed, Spear was able to fulfill her clients’ requests without making big changes to the kitchen footprint. Where the formal dining room used to be is now a walk-in pantry (behind the frosted glass door on the barn door track) and, beyond it, a new home office. Spear also added an extra wall oven and incorporated the clients’ existing formal dining table (peeking out on the left) within the kitchen’s eat-in area. To achieve the coastal look the clients were after, Spear selected white for the perimeter cabinetry and walls and navy (Sherwin-Williams’ Naval) for the base of the island, which measures 3½ feet by 6 feet. The countertops are marble-like quartz and the backsplash is glacier white marble subway tile, which Spear composed in a herringbone pattern behind the range.
As many items as possible from the old kitchen were recycled or donated, and Swartz was able to repurpose some of the cabinets, giving them a Shaker-style front to match the new ones. Placing the range on the wall seen here and the fridge on the opposite wall created an efficient work triangle with the new apron-front sink. Swartz selected a Euro-style electric range that includes a convection oven and baking drawer. The 30-inch luxury microwave above it vents to the outside and has a powerful blower that acts like a built-in hood. The kitchen’s neutral palette never veers into bland territory thanks to special details throughout. For instance, warm greige veining enlivens the pearl white quartz countertops, while intricate crackling animates the greenish beige backsplash tiles. Backsplash tiles: Magnolia, Fireclay Tile
After: Swartz’s first order of business: removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a more open plan. The added breathing room allowed for a G-shaped layout with appliances and fixtures placed for better flow. To the right of the fridge, a new pass-through to the den (not pictured) helps the cook feel connected rather than closed off. The kitchen’s new look draws from the homeowners’ memories of romantic French vacations. The green-gray cabinet color (Ash Grey by Farrow & Ball) was inspired by French countryside shutters, while the counter stools, with their creamy upholstery and turned legs in a driftwood finish, nod to bucolic scenes. Flooring of reclaimed white oak with beautiful variations underscores the look and coordinates with the wood floors in adjacent rooms. Stools: Ernie fabric counter stool in French Cream, New Pacific Direct; pendant lights: Robinson in hand-rubbed antique brass and clear glass by Thomas O’Brien for Visual Comfort
After: Jarquin took the kitchen down to the studs and swapped the locations of the kitchen and dining area, installing wood-look luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout. In the kitchen, she installed creamy off-white semicustom maple upper and pantry cabinets with a Coconut finish. The lowers are a more kid-proof rustic hickory with a Buckskin stain. A zellige-style tile backsplash in varying cream tones and a polished white quartz countertop with black veining complements the two-tone cabinetry. The new breakfast area has a 42-inch round tulip table and four midcentury-modern-style wood chairs with charcoal-colored cushions. Wall paint: Mascarpone, Benjamin Moore
Useful design ideas about kitchen remodels
Hi skrieger8, the floors come from a company called Shannon and Waterman out of Memphis Tennessee (http://www.shannonwaterman.com/alpine). These particular floors are from their Samuel Lee Collection. They are 7" wide white oak, no stain. The company does great custom flooring and was reasonably priced compared to others. Hope this helps
Custom Slant Hood with cast nickel matte finish. By Brooks Custom
Homeowners’ request. “Our clients bought their forever home in a perfect location, but it was not in such perfect condition,” designer Ksusha Olson says. “They knew right away that they would be remodeling their main level sooner rather than later. The existing kitchen was separated from the great room by a wall, felt very dark with just one small window and dark cabinetry. The dated soffits, linoleum floors and popcorn ceiling all had to go. And it was far from being functional for a young, growing family.” Warm, neutral palette. “It became clear from the very beginning that the homeowner was leaning toward a stylish white theme, something timeless, elegant and versatile,” Olson says. “As a designer, I have learned that not all whites are created equal. Some may look too stark or too warm for your space. We chose a couple dominant whites that added freshness and sophistication. We went with Benjamin Moore Pale Oak for the kitchen cabinetry and Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace for the walls and millwork. Calacatta Laza quartz countertops felt like a perfect choice for this palette thanks to its dramatic movement, milky white background and realistic soft brown veining.” Other specia...

Blind corner cabinets won’t cut it. Yes, they provide ample storage space, but too often they turn into unofficial junk bins when you tire of getting on all fours to fetch the dish you need. Performing that bend-reach-lift motion also isn’t good for aging backs. Look for corner cabinet bases that effectively eliminate the need for rummaging and reaching. They aren’t all the same, though. You have options, be it a convenient three-drawer base (left)
good ideas for functional kitchen building as we age
The new French door counter-depth stainless steel refrigerator is surrounded by white oak cabinets, including a tall pantry cabinet with pullout shelves on the right. “Having the refrigerator flush with that wall looks much more clean and less messy,” Nguyen says. “At the same time, you have usable workspace near the refrigerator, making it easier to use.” The island contains a 24-inch stainless steel microwave oven drawer. Microwave oven drawer in stainless steel: Sharp; refrigerator: professional 22.6-cubic-foot French door counter-depth, Frigidaire
A new 30-inch front-control gas range with air fry, five burners and convection oven sits below a 30-inch custom hood with wood trim. A spice pullout sits to the right of the range. The three drawers to the left of the range hold utensils and food storage containers. A paneled 18-inch trash and recycling pullout is to the left of those drawers. The cabinet next to the trash and recycling pullout is a blind corner cabinet for the family’s rice cooker and extra pots and pans. “We included a cabinet in the island for storing their everyday pots and pans,” Nguyen says. Stove: Professional 30-inch front-control gas range with air fry, Frigidaire; range hood insert: Monsoon Connect, Zephyr
The recessed upper cabinets flanking the range include reeded glass doors. “This creates symmetry and makes the space feel lighter,” Nguyen says. “If it’s all solid cabinets, it feels heavy.” The reeded glass adds lightness while obscuring the view of the items inside, reducing visual clutter.
The Blue Celeste and Thassos marble mosaic backsplash adds another bit of blue and a subtle pattern that coordinates with the coastal aesthetic. “I think the backsplash tile played a crucial part in bringing everything together,” Nguyen says. “This pattern was extremely helpful to the entire design.” Faucet: Sleek matte black one-handle high arc pull-down, Moen; sconce: Welton in brushed nickel, Kira Home; cabinet hardware: Cumberland in Ash Gray, Top Knobs
After: Nguyen created a fresh coastal look with a mix of powder blue cabinets (Yarmouth Blue, Benjamin Moore), crisp white upper cabinets (Moonlight White, Benjamin Moore) and white oak cabinets on the refrigerator wall and island base. “We worked with the cabinetry company to find a driftwood-look finish for the white oak,” Nguyen says. “This fits the coastal style of the room.” New red oak flooring in a light matte finish, hand-braided sedge pendant lights and striped pillows and seat cushions add to the look. An ash veneer dining table and distressed light blue indoor-outdoor metal chairs complement the color and material scheme. “They really love the bench, especially their young son,” Nguyen says. “This becomes not just a dining area; it’s a play area and somewhere the son can stay near Mom when she’s cooking.” Chairs: Distressed green-blue metal indoor-outdoor stackable, Flash Furniture; cabinets: EHL Kitchens; wall paint: Alabaster, Benjamin Moore
