What about painting the centre portion of the wall (where the TV is mounted) charcoal? TV becomes less visible, gives a graphic element for the shelving to play off.

Cost effective option with floating upper shelves and open lower bookcases. What about an electric fireplace insert off centre on the wall, at or below the level of the TV (which will stay in its current low, centered position on the wall)?

Intrigued by the use of thinner shelves above/thicker below. I don't like how the built-ins follow the slope of the ceiling.

Perhaps bookcases below the level of the TV

Material: birch plywood? If wood, something that echoes the hood fan surround without costing big bucks

Combine built in and floating shelves? In the past have gravitated to more traditional symmetrical built-ins, but open to something more modern/quirky

Quirky, original details, eg. wallpaper almost hidden; tiny painting on big wall

Need to think how high the shelving will go. Perhaps to the same level as the top of the kitchen cabinet headers across the hallway. I wouldn't like the look of built-in shelves that follow the rise of the ceiling, but perhaps playing with this look with a couple of floating shelves could work?

Painted finish? Re the design, I don't think it needs to be this symmetrical.
