The homeowners of this California Cottage wanted a beach vibe in their 1700 sq. ft. home. They wanted to make the most of their spaces by widening doorways, adding wood floors throughout the house, and adding a skylight. The result is cozy, casual California living at its best with frequent family dinners and celebrations with friends. The teenage daughter in the family requested a colorful, patterned, ethnic vibe for her bedroom.

We took a predictable suburban spec house and transformed it into a unique home of enduring value and family-centered design. The existing footprint was expanded where it needed it most: in the family and kitchen area, creating a large square room with open views to a protected nature preserve abutting the property. An unexpected glass canopy and teak entry door are clues that what lies beyond is hardly commonplace.
The design challenge was to infuse modern-day functionality and architectural quality into a spec house. Working in partnership with Gary Cruz Studio, we designed the pared down, art-filled interiors with the goal of creating comfortable, purposeful living environments. We also sought to integrate the existing pool and rear deck into the overall building design, extending the usable space outside as a screened-in porch, a dining terrace, and a seating area around a stone fire pit.

The glass top table provides an intimate dining space and allows the exquisite chartreuse and grey damask fabric on the silver leaf custom dining chairs to shine through. Buffet lamps provide additional ambient lighting. The buffet itself was a consignment store find.

The master bedroom is a sumptuous retreat for the couple. Ample space accommodates a custom upholstered king headboard and generously proportioned furnishings. The draperies and bedding are all custom made and swathe the room in the same rich and dramatic fabric.

One of the first steps in taking the home from dark and drab to cheerful and welcoming was painting the darkly stained built-in bookcases off-white and highlighting the backs in a gorgeous aqua, giving them dimension and adding a wash of color to the entire wall. Outdated ceiling fans were replaced with the luminous ceiling fixtures which cast a soft glow.

This kitchen is nothing but joyful in the morning with it’s apple green walls and custom valances adding a splash of color and pattern about the windows. The new chandelier is more appropriately sized for the space and its crystal accents reflect light throughout the room.

Old brown backsplash tile was replaced with this stunning classic marble pattern which breathes new life into the existing cabinets and countertop. Black and white is a terrific, elegant counterpart to the warm green walls.

The planning phase of this modern retreat was an intense collaboration that took place over the course of more than two years. The main challenge on the site was elevation. The southeast corner of the lot stands 5'6" above the threshold of the rear door, while the northeast corner dropped a full 2' below the threshold. The backyard was also long and narrow, sloping side-to-side and toward the house. The key to the design concept was to deftly place the project in to the slope, utilize the elevation changes, but not allow them to dominate the yard, or overwhelm the senses.
