From the street, a round rock pathway leads to a small seating area next to the water with a small fire pit. Low maintenance, drought resistant and salt tolerant plantings were used in mass and clumps. This garden has become the focus of the neighborhood with many visitors stopping and enjoying what has become a neighborhood landmark. Located on the shores of Puget Sound in Washington State. The beach often becomes your backyard when you live in Southern California, but a private outdoor space is always a necessity. This project was completed for a client residing in Newport Beach, Ca. With limited space, we were able to create a colorful outdoor patio that serves as a perfect complement to their uninterrupted view of the Pacific Ocean.

This very low water usage landscape design for entry on a craftsman style home incorporates color pumping roses, perennials, colorful trees, a small patch of lawn, and ornamental grasses. Mulch tidies up the flower bed and keeps weeds to a minimum. Design and installation by Kodiak Landscape®.

In 2022, I designed new planting beds for the front garden of a private client in Bristol, who wanted a space that echoed the Mediterranean landscapes they had come to love on their travels.
The site, a sun-soaked, south-facing slope in front of a tall stone retaining wall, offered a hot and dry microclimate, making Mediterranean planting both a practical and fitting choice. With a few young olive trees and an established Cordyline already in place, I shaped the new scheme around these key elements, preserving their character while building a cohesive and vibrant planting design around them.
To capture the essence of Mediterranean gravel gardens, I created a richly layered composition with swaying grasses like Nassella and Sesleria, architectural highlights from Euphorbia, Yucca, Agave, and Libertia, and seasonal colour from Lavandula, Perovskia, Thymus, and Eryngium. Two new groupings of Cordyline frame the space, adding height and structure. The planting palette features soft grasses and silver, grey, and blue-toned foliage, offset by bold, sharp-leaved forms, creating a dynamic contrast that brings the dry garden aesthetic to life.

We all love a gorgeous lawn, right? But there are plenty of alternatives to grass when planning your front yard landscaping.

We were asked by the owners of this Dover Heights coastal home to create a front garden design that would enhance the modern design and location of the house.
It is located right on the cliffs at Dover Heights Sydney and is subjected to the harsh coastal winds and sea salt in the area.
Our focus was on low maintenance, water wise planting and design that would withstand the elements and evolve over time.

Another look at the perfectly positioned English Elm (Ulmus quercifolia). The elm has had its canopy professionally lifted to maximise light. The silver foliage is Jacobaea maritima (syn. Senecio cineraria) - a faboulous dry tolerant mounding ground cover for sun or part shade.

this tiny water-wise front yard is on a terrace leading up to the house, viewed both from the inside of the house and looking down on the garden from the stairs to the front door. The garden is designed to be a 'garden of curiosities', a visual painting with dramatic foliage color and architectural plants. Succulents include Agava 'Kara's Stripes', Various Aeoniums, Phormiums, Coprosma 'Pacific Sunset', Oxalis 'Zinfandel', Chondropetalum, Agave 'Blue Glow (pot) among other plants

3d rendering for a landscape design project in Claremont, CA. - A mixture of drought tolerant plants and grasses with modern look materials make this house the envy of the block

We transformed this unusable sloping side yard into a casual and modern outdoor living space. Complete with modern privacy fencing, fire bowl and an outdoor shower.

THE LEMON TREE TRUST GARDEN
A garden inspired by the resilience, determination and ingenuity of refugees living in Domiz camp in Northern Iraq, was unveiled at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Lemon Tree Trust garden, designed with the input of refugees, highlighted the unexpected beauty hidden in the camp. The garden was designed to be used as a space to begin to organise the chaos inherent in forced migration, while also providing a sense of normality, wellbeing, peace and civility to broken lives.
Beautiful yet drought tolerant planting educated visitors about the type of plants refugees grow in the camp. Ingenious vertical planting, inspired by refugees’ use of everyday objects, and including input from refugees themselves, provided ideas for planting in limited spaces. Trees laden with fruit, including figs, lemons and pomegranates, provided scent and crops to harvest. Brutal, harsh materials, such as concrete and steel, widely available in the camps, were elevated with techniques such as polishing, casting and crafting into patterns and intricate Islamic inspired designs. Colourful and textural planting softened the hard materials. Cooling and calming water flowed throughout the space, collected in channels and pools, recycled and pumped back through the brimming central Islamic inspired fountain, representing the importance of grey water reuse and the many makeshift fountains refugees have built in their own gardens in Domiz camp.
Tom Massey progressed to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with a 10x13m Main Avenue garden, after two successful show gardens at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The garden was built by award winning contractor Landscape Associates and was awarded an RHS Silver-Gilt medal.

The goal of this landscape design and build project was to create a simple patio using peastone with a granite cobble edging. The patio sits adjacent to the residence and is bordered by lawn, vegetable garden beds, and a cairn rock water feature. Designed and built by Skyline Landscapes, LLC.
