Download our free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   The homeowners came to us looking to update the kitchen in their historic 1897 home. The home had gone through an extensive renovation several years earlier that added a master bedroom suite and updates to the front façade. The kitchen however was not part of that update and a prior 1990’s update had left much to be desired. The client is an avid cook, and it was just not very functional for the family. The original kitchen was very choppy and included a large eat in area that took up more than its fair share of the space. On the wish list was a place where the family could comfortably congregate, that was easy and to cook in, that feels lived in and in check with the rest of the home’s décor. They also wanted a space that was not cluttered and dark – a happy, light and airy room. A small powder room off the space also needed some attention so we set out to include that in the remodel as well. See that arch in the neighboring dining room? The homeowner really wanted to make the opening to the dining room an arch to match, so we incorporated that into the design. Another unfortunate eyesore was the state of the ceiling and soffits. Turns out it was just a series of shortcuts from the prior renovation, and we were surprised and delighted that we were easily able to flatten out almost the entire ceiling with a couple of little reworks. Other changes we made were to add new windows that were appropriate to the new design, which included moving the sink window over slightly to give the work zone more breathing room. We also adjusted the height of the windows in what was previously the eat-in area that were too low for a countertop to work. We tried to keep an old island in the plan since it was a well-loved vintage find, but the tradeoff for the function of the new island was not worth it in the end. We hope the old found a new home, perhaps as a potting table. This vintage kitchen was part of staged project... New owners may want to gut, but the current owners LOVED the vintage quality so we left this in it's "Native" state. It's vintage range fit the style of the cottage. We added some updated plumbing in polished chrome for a little bit of sparkle. Tom Clary, Clarified Photography

These homeowners wanted to create a refresh and update to their traditional-style kitchen. The result is inviting and timeless! The perimeter cabinets are Maple Ash with a Vicostone Statuario countertop. The Alabaster island with a Cinza Grey countertop stage this newly updated kitchen with an eye-catching contrast of color. The Eden Greige backsplash creates a flow complementing the colors throughout. The homeowners are thrilled with the final results!

It is sometimes a surprise what beauty can lurk under the surface of a room. A client with a 1970s kitchen and eat-in area cut up by an unwieldy peninsula was desperate for it to reflect her love of all things English-and-French-Manor-Home. Working closely with my client, we removed the peninsula in favor of a lovely free-standing island that we painted a shade of French Blue. This is topped with Old World sink hardware (note the ceramic HOT and COLD medallions on the faucets!) and a gorgeous marble counter with a very special edge profile that evokes an antique French Boulangerie counter from the 1910s. Pendants with patinaed metal shades over the island further the charming Old World feel. Handmade white and blue tiles laid in a quilted diamond pattern cover the backsplash, and the remainder of the cabinetry at the perimeter is in a warm cream tone. The eat-in near the fireplace got a cozy treatment with custom seat cushions and window seat bench cushions in a classic blue-and-white Toile de Jouy matching the island stools. The nearby living room got a similar treatment. We removed dark wood paneling and dark carpeting in favor of a light sky blue wall and lighter wood flooring. A new rug with the appearance of an heirloom, a new grand-scaled sofa, and some of my client’s precious antiques helped take the room from 70s rec room to English Sitting Room. This gorgeous new kitchen used to be just about half the size before we stepped in for renovations. Not only did we open up the space, but we completely changed nearly every design aspect! The kitchen went from a U-shape to an L-shape, we added an island with seating, swapped laminate counters for quartz and upgraded the backsplash tile. We replaced the old wood-tone cabinets with sleek, painted cabinets - and installed under cabinet lighting and plugs to keep the counters looking bright and clutter-free.

For this whole home remodel and addition project, we removed the existing roof and knee walls to construct new 1297 s/f second story addition. We increased the main level floor space with a 4’ addition (100s/f to the rear) to allow for a larger kitchen and wider guest room. We also reconfigured the main level, creating a powder bath and converting the existing primary bedroom into a family room, reconfigured a guest room and added new guest bathroom, completed the kitchen remodel, and reconfigured the basement into a media room.

Love the variation in this tile from Sonoma tileworks! This client wanted a warm kitchen without any gray. The countertops have a warm veining pattern to go with the brown wood tones and we added some rustic/industrial details to make it feel like the client's mountain cabin.

This kitchen packs a punch with high end appliances and luscious latte colored cabinets by Dura Supreme. The white Calacatta marble adds more elegance to this classic kitchen. The stacked glass cabinets gives the room more height as well as the unique hood and spice shelf over the cook top. The Hutch, which also serves as a bar, is highlighted in a lighter paint color. The large lantern over the kitchen table and the latch pulls add a hint of the past.

This is an extensive kitchen/dining remodel that involved the removal of a wall and moving a large support header to the attic. The customer wanted a custom oak desk that covering the entire wall of their home office to match the new kitchen cabinetry, large pantry, and hutch/china cabinet with glass doors. The kitchen includes pullouts for spices and trash, as well as a cookie-sheet cabinet above the double oven. The island has an under-counter space for a large microwave and a stainless steel and glass vent hood for the cooktop. The floors are tiled with a ceramic hard-wood styled tile that is very resilient to drops and spills. All our cabinetry is custom made with 100% true-wood (no MDF of particle board), full-extension heavy-duty pull-out tracks, and European hidden-hinges.
