Modern farmhouse kitchen design and remodel for a traditional San Francisco home include simple organic shapes, light colors, and clean details. Our farmhouse style incorporates walnut end-grain butcher block, floating walnut shelving, vintage Wolf range, and curvaceous handmade ceramic tile. Contemporary kitchen elements modernize the farmhouse style with stainless steel appliances, quartz countertop, and cork flooring.

The site for this new house was specifically selected for its proximity to nature while remaining connected to the urban amenities of Arlington and DC. From the beginning, the homeowners were mindful of the environmental impact of this house, so the goal was to get the project LEED certified. Even though the owner’s programmatic needs ultimately grew the house to almost 8,000 square feet, the design team was able to obtain LEED Silver for the project. The first floor houses the public spaces of the program: living, dining, kitchen, family room, power room, library, mudroom and screened porch. The second and third floors contain the master suite, four bedrooms, office, three bathrooms and laundry. The entire basement is dedicated to recreational spaces which include a billiard room, craft room, exercise room, media room and a wine cellar. To minimize the mass of the house, the architects designed low bearing roofs to reduce the height from above, while bringing the ground plain up by specifying local Carder Rock stone for the foundation walls. The landscape around the house further anchored the house by installing retaining walls using the same stone as the foundation. The remaining areas on the property were heavily landscaped with climate appropriate vegetation, retaining walls, and minimal turf. Other LEED elements include LED lighting, geothermal heating system, heat-pump water heater, FSA certified woods, low VOC paints and high R-value insulation and windows. This new riverfront townhouse is on three levels. The interiors blend clean contemporary elements with traditional cottage architecture. It is luxurious, yet very relaxed. The Weiland sliding door is fully recessed in the wall on the left. The fireplace stone is called Hudson Ledgestone by NSVI. The cabinets are custom. The cabinet on the left has articulated doors that slide out and around the back to reveal the tv. It is a beautiful solution to the hide/show tv dilemma that goes on in many households! The wall paint is a custom mix of a Benjamin Moore color, Glacial Till, AF-390. The trim paint is Benjamin Moore, Floral White, OC-29. Christmas decorations don’t need to be red and green! This mantel arrangement accentuates the cobalt blue, white and silver color scheme of the dramatic dining room. Peacock feathers and glass ornaments sit on a bed of juniper. Undulating silver candles and ethereal branch arrangements glow in the light of the crystal sconces.

This mesmerising floor in marble herringbone tiles, echos the Art Deco style with its stunning colour palette. Embracing our clients openness to sustainability, we installed a unique cabinet and marble sink, which was repurposed into a standout bathroom feature with its intricate detailing and extensive storage.
