This Mill Valley residence under the redwoods was conceived and designed for a young and growing family. Though technically a remodel, the project was in essence new construction from the ground up, and its clean, traditional detailing and lay-out by Chambers & Chambers offered great opportunities for our talented carpenters to show their stuff. This home features the efficiency and comfort of hydronic floor heating throughout, solid-paneled walls and ceilings, open spaces and cozy reading nooks, expansive bi-folding doors for indoor/ outdoor living, and an attention to detail and durability that is a hallmark of how we build. This bathroom was introduced into an 1853 Greek Revival row house. The home owners desired modern amenities like radiant floor heating, a steam shower, and a towel warmer. But they also wanted the space to match the period charm of their older home. A large glass-encased shower stall is the central player in the new bathroom. Lined with 3" x 6" white subway tile and fully enclosed by glass, the shower is bright and welcoming. And then the transom window at the top is closed, steam jets lining the shower create a relaxing spa. Although placed on an interior wall, the new bath is filled with abundant natural light, thanks to transom windows which welcome sunshine from the hallway. Photos by Shelly Harrison.

Historic reproduction Subway tile for the walls and Unglazed porcelain hexagons for the floor. – There is no glazing or any other coating applied to the tile. Their color is the same on the face of the tile as it is on the back resulting in very durable tiles that do not show the effects of heavy traffic. The most common unglazed tiles are the red quarry tiles or the granite looking porcelain ceramic tiles used in heavy commercial areas. Historic matches to the original tiles made from 1890 - 1930's. Subway Ceramic floor tiles are made of the highest quality unglazed porcelain and carefully arranged on a fiber mesh as one square foot sheets. A complimentary black hex is also in stock in both sizes and available by the sheet for creating borders and accent designs. Full bathroom remodel with updated layout in historic Victorian home. White cabinetry, quartz countertop, ash gray hardware, Delta faucets and shower fixtures, hexagon porcelain mosaic floor tile, Carrara marble trim on window and shower niches, deep soaking tub, and TOTO Washlet bidet toilet.

With new flooring, a refinished bathtub, and stunning floor-to-ceiling white, beveled subway tile, this pull and replace downstairs bathroom transformation dares to impress. Taking the tile all the way to the ceiling created a classic modern look and provided a clean, crisp background for the beautiful plumbing fixtures, wall sconce and decorative mirror. For a splash of elegance and sophistication, a new drain and trip lever were installed to match the finish of the new Luxe Gold Brizo faucets. Adding just the right balance of classic modern luxury, the space was finished off with classic Italian Carrara Marble mosaic flooring and a fresh coat of paint. The existing pedestal sink and toilet were reused to help achieve the homeowner’s budget.

The downstairs bathroom the clients were wanting a space that could house a freestanding bath at the end of the space, a larger shower space and a custom- made cabinet that was made to look like a piece of furniture. A nib wall was created in the space offering a ledge as a form of storage. The reference of black cabinetry links back to the kitchen and the upstairs bathroom, whilst the consistency of the classic look was again shown through the use of subway tiles and patterned floors.
