My prehistoric kitchen was badly in need of a makeover. A referral led me to designer Lori Bliss who in turn recommended Kyle Mortz, President of AOC, whom she had collaborated with for 18 years. Lori drew up my dream kitchen and Kyle and his skilled team of craftsmen made it happen. Each and every team member was polite, kept the noise level down and cleaned up at the end of each day. I give special kudos to Eric, who went into great detail explaining the mechanics of the construction. AOC was neither the least nor the most expensive of the companies I had contacted and I can say without reservation that AOC was worth every dollar that I spent Their attention to detail was impressive. Bethany, Project Manager, kept me in the loop updating the status of the project and returning my calls.

My wife and I chose Kyle Mortz and his company, Art of Construction, after meeting with 7 general contractors from the SF Bay Area, and we could not be happier with the results. Kyle is clearly a person deeply and personally interested in the literal art of home construction, and is also a very well organized and thorough communicator. He not only produced the most detailed estimate of construction very early in the process of our single family home renovation (for which we paid him at his hourly rate - a practice that should be standard in this industry so everyone's expectations are met), but also worked thoroughly with me and the architects to reduce scope in intelligent ways that retained the architect's intent (we hired Terry&Terry Architecture). His team was energetic and skillful, and everyone worked together really well. I highly recommend him and his company to anyone renovating a home in San Francisco.

Art of construction has done close to a dozen remodel projects for us in San Francisco over the past decade. They consistently deliver value, and a great product. Kyle and his team are great problem solvers and a pleasure to work with!

I have worked with Art of Construction as the interior designer on three projects : two large modern new construction, and one major transitional style remodel. In all cases, Kyle and his team have been professional, flexible, creative, and have an attention to detail that is impressive. Coming onsite is always a positive experience, and I highly recommend this firm in every way.

A+ quality of work. I worked directly with Jerry one of the owners of AOC. The entire team and subs were very professional. My project was a bathroom re-model in an older house. The build/framing and execution were right on per the architectural drawings. Any questions that did come up during the process was addressed before proceeding. AOC was very organized ordering of all materials, tiles, windows, fixtures etc. we had no hold-ups waiting, everything was delivered on time. They were pro-active and did not require any micro-managing. Billing was also very organized. I would hire AOC again in a heartbeat!

Walk in curbless shower on concrete slab: Listened to what I wanted and had the expertise to do it. Other contractors either didn't know how to do it/said it could not be done or wanted it according to their vision. Was able to give me options while not forcing me to change my vision. Stuck to the overall plan and was flexible when new things were added. Budget was well managed; timelines dragged out but that is true of many contractors as they manage multiple projects at a time.

Art of Construction did a remodel of a hall bathroom and office. The work was handled professionally and all subs were well managed. Any issues were quickly resolved and we found it a pleasure to work with them. They were recommended to us by our designer and all of us were happy with the results. We would work with them again and recommend them to friends.

Kyle's craftsmanship, exceptional resources and project management brought together an ambitious remodel. The detail and custom work was outstanding. I have found that Kyle is someone who deeply cares about his work. He is always available to answer questions and I have hired him to do additional projects and updates. Always responsive and very reasonable, especially for the work and quality he delivers.

Art of Construction built our Palo Alto home in 2013. They were excellent in quality, timeliness and being on-budget. Great people.

We hired Kyle Mortz Owner of Art of Construction to build a modern home in Palo Alto. Kyle was honest, reliable, great to work with, responsive and did a great job all round. The quality of the work was high and the price was within reason. Kyle said he could complete the build in 10 months and delivered on this goal which helped us enormously as we had to move out of a rental within that timeframe. Building with Art of Construction was a good experience. Were I to build again, I would definitely hire them again.

Update from fall 2014: We hired AOC again for a set of smaller projects; painting the front of the house, replacing windows and putting a door in an exterior wall. Kyle and his team was fantastic, skilled, and trustworthy throughout. They stayed on schedule, on budget, and as we now have 2 kids and way less time, we were thrilled at how proactive Kyle is with excellent decision-making and instincts. He's been incredibly responsive since the project has finished, including bringing his electrician out to help with what I thought was a faulty LED fixture and which actually was just an incandescent bulb replacement. Whoops. They were all very generous about that one. I've heard stories of contractors disappearing after the final check is written, and we've had the opposite experience with AOC. We will indeed hire them again! Original review: We worked with Kyle at Art of Construction on our substantial project, including both renovation and new construction. We couldn't be more happy with the entire process - he's really great at working with project owners, staying on top of details, problem-solving when issues come up, is very collaborative, tech-savvy, has an eye for design, and is a nice guy to boot. Our project was fixed-bid, and change orders were only when obviously necessary (such as adding new windows to the project scope). He finished the project on-time and within-budget, neither of which we were actually assuming would happen. We worked hard at being good clients, but he exceeded our expectations and we're looking forward to working with him again.
