The plant you're referring to is Berberis "Rosy Glow". It is a great plant that tolerates a wide range of conditions, though it does prefer full sun. It is deciduous and has thorns. If well pruned it looks fine in the Winter without leaves. Some of our Clients are hesitant about using it because of the thorns, but we're usually the ones taking care of it anyway. It can be selectively thinned in the winter to help control size and shape (the preferred method). Or, if you're a lazy gardener like I am at my own house, you can cut it back hard every several years and let it regrow.
